Earth 2 #19 is still gathering pieces for a battle royale. Batman has his team of heroes, but finds that there is one more person to be added to the mix. Elsewhere, Superman sends a message to the world: a new Apokolips is coming. There’s some fun moments in this issue, yet for the most part, it’s still leading up to a bigger confrontation.

With a little help from his friends, Batman discovers there is a secret alien being held beneath the Arkham World Army Base. That alien turns out to be a very normal looking person. The surprise is that the “alien” is a Kryptonian. Not much is done with the Kryptonian, or Batman for that matter, except for some dialog scenes. Marella, Queen of Atlantis, gets some showy panels where she shows off her powers. Still, their situation mostly provides for some dialog and setup. The real action happens elsewhere.

Marella, Queen of Atlantis, makes a door.

In the most minor of scenes in this issue, Red Arrow faces down a cloud of parademons while defending Doctor Fate. After being beat senseless by Superman, Fate is pretty much out of his mind and rambles on about “Angel in the Slaughter. Green!” They only get two pages of attention, so it’s not clear exactly how they fit in yet. However, angel in the slaughter could refer to Hawkgirl.

The main action takes place with Superman. He sets up a press conference with Bedlam on the White House lawn. To put on a show, he takes the Washington Monument and throws it into the White House, destroying both. He then tells everyone that a new Apokolips is coming. Belam also takes the opportunity to inform Mister Terrific and Terry Sloan that they’ll be brainwashed to help bring Darkseid to this world. Like Batman’s storythread, there’s a lot of setup here as pieces are moved into position and the story is fleshed out more.

The issue ends with a bit of mystery. The place where Steppenwolf was murdered…and forgive me, but I find it hilarious that there is a character called Steppenwolf…appears to be the place where something “green” is. Not sure how this will tie in with the angel in the slaughter thing, but it was intriguing.

With solid artwork and an interesting story, Earth 2 #19 is a fun comic. There’s some action, some plot development, and a bit more exploration of the strange characters in this realm of the DC universe. It’s a weird spin on things, but sometimes weird can be a good thing. I give Earth 2 #19 a four out of five metal bikinis.
