So Doctor Aphra #39 teases something that might actually be important to the greater Star Wars story. She learns the location of the Hoth base, but the comic doesn’t confirm if she tells Vader.

There’s actually a lot packed into this issue. Aphra is pursued by Tolvan, evades her, seduces her, then learns the location of the Hoth base and ditches her. She sends her dad off to rescue Vulaada, while her and BT head their own way, but not before she sends a message to Vader about where the rebel base is. But the comic stops short of saying it’s Hoth. We know Aphra knows it’s Hoth, but did she actually tell Vader?

Both the art and the story are okay in this issue. Everyone has a slightly different look, and the colors are a bit muted, but there’s lots of detail and good work with the shading and lighting. The dialog is interesting. Sometimes it sucks you in, sometimes it’s corny. It’s not always Star Wars but sometimes it makes you laugh. Simon zeroes in on the Tolvan/Aphra romance in this issue, but having Aphra backstab her once again feels very repetitive. Maybe the story is heading somewhere else, but right now it feels like Aphra will never evolve.

All in all, it’s an okay issue. I give it a three out of five metal bikinis.
