In Doctor Aphra #30, Triple Zero finally finds his maker. The revelation, however, is not the answer he was looking for.

There’s not really any action in this issue, but it is a journey of self-discovery for the characters. Aphra gets caught by the propaganda troops and has to decide if she wants to sacrifice Triple Zero in order to save her own life, or if she wants to save Triple Zero. She chooses the droid. In so doing, she realizes just how awful and low of a person she is and is reduced to tears. She gives Triple Zero back his memories, and he discovers that his creator made him but considered him a mistake and tried to throw him out with the trash. This sends the murder bot into a fit of depression, and quite possibly into a path of suicide as the issue ends with him walking away and the bombs in their heads ticking down for the final explosion.

The story is pretty good. Both characters come up against some hard truths, and it leaves the reader wondering where the characters will go from here. It’s safe to assume they aren’t going to blow up in the next issue, so how will they recover? How will they take these self-discoveries and move on?

The artwork is also pretty good. The highlight easily being the two page spread of Trips head with all his memories shadowed within.

With some dark characters, and even some dark subject matter, this issue is pretty heavy. It’ll be interesting to see where things go next. As is, I give this one a four out of five metal bikinis.
