Action. Laughs. And more crazy action. That’s Doctor Aphra #18. Every wild, bizarre thing thrown into a freezer and then unleashed, with Aphra’s back to the wall. Throw in Hera and you’ve got an insanely fun issue.

It kicks off on Aphra’s ship as her and her team head toward the Tarkin Initiative secret facility Hivebase-1. These quiet moments before the storm allow for some character development, some plot seeds, and some humor. Then the storm begins as Aphra’s plan kicks into motion, allowing her an entry vector into the secret Imperial base. Inside, they find a treasure trove of weird creatures, monsters and droids, many a mixture of all three. As the heist progresses, things of course go wrong, and all those frozen monsters gets thawed out. Now on one hand, the writers are having fun naming off all these strange creations. On the other hand, they’re giving artist Emilio Laiso the opportunity to bring some of these things to life. A Wookiee with a blaster cannon for a head. A spider version of K-2SO. Things with tentacles, brains, bug bodies, cyborg bodies, it’s a chaotic and imaginative pool of nightmare creatures. Or course, some are just plain humorous looking. Either way, it adds to the fun of it all.

In the end, Aphra and team get caught by some very weird Imperials. There’s Deathtroopers, some kind of augmented Hutt troopers, and an Imperial guy in a big metal tube construct. It leaves the readers wondering how Aphra will get out of this one.

With a crazy fun story and artwork to match, Doctor Aphra #18 continues to just pull out the stops and go for it. It’s the kind of Star Wars I love and this one gets a five out of five metal bikinis.
