Doctor Aphra #16 is sheer fun. This is what happens when Star Wars storytelling is unshackled from the chains of the films and the big three and left to wander into the creative abyss. With an all star cast of non-film characters, this issue brings action, laughs and excitement as Aphra and team break into a Techno Union vault to steal some treasure. Alas their big score leads them on the trail of an even bigger mission to come.

The issue opens with Aphra’s team narrowly dodging the Imperials as they continue their quest to raid a booby trapped vault of it’s goods. Of course the trap gets sprung and chaos ensues. Magna Tolvan shows up with some stormtroopers, upping the action level, and Aphra’s team proves to be an erratic mess. Two of the members won’t attack as no laws have been broken, one runs away, and another dances and sings in some far off la la land of its droid mind. Yet someone Aphra survives, as does most of her team. They kind of get what they’re looking for, but it ultimately leads to Triple Zero giving them another mission as he continues to track down his missing memories. Oh, and Aphra and Tolvan have some moments as their “relationship” goes to the next level. Plus there are laughs all along the way. It’s a ridiculously fun adventure.

Bringing that adventure to life, Laiso and Rosenberg doing a great job with the artwork. There’s lots of detail, great lighting, and the action is easy to follow as it bursts from panel to panel. There’s just the right emphasis on the key moments, and the panels in between do a good job of moving the story along.

With an extremely fun story and good artwork, Doctor Aphra #16 is a highlight of what Marvel is doing with Star Wars. I just which they did more like this. Regardless, I give this one a five out of five metal bikinis.
