Black Science #27 brings back some characters from the past to fight a new enemy that may be too much to bear. It’s a super team up of scientists against an infectious plague.

Now I haven’t read all of Black Science, so there’s a lot of background in this issue that I’m missing out on, something which will probably have a lot more pay off for long time readers. While running from the evil ghost things possessing people as they try to catch her, Pia runs into some friends from the past. Those friends include Nate, Krolar and Shawn.

Unfortunately, I’m not familiar with these characters, but putting the pieces together, I can see who they might be. Either way, Nate is a superhero now and his friends are pretty capable with their own skills and tech. It’s a nice interjection into Pia’s very realistic world. Then again, with the infestation going crazy, who knows how much of that world will be left.

The story throws in some twists and turns which keeps things exciting and helps take away from the dour turn the series has been in since Grant’s capture. The art adds to the story with its big, colorful panels and textured images. It imparts its own signature look which is unique, intriguing and fun to look at.

With good visuals and a story that’s still compelling and driving things forward, I give this issue a four out of five metal bikinis. It’ll probably work better for long time readers, but even for newer readers like myself, it still works well enough.
