Age of Resistance kicks off with Finn #1 which is a neat little story set sometime before the events of The Force Awakens. Finn is stationed on Starkiller Base, mop in hand, and dealing with the dreary chores of the First Order. Things get spiced up as he’s sent on a mission with a team to deal with a deadly infestation on the base. But things take a turn from there and Finn winds up on a garbage run, thought it’s not exactly a bad end for him with all things considered. What could have been a throwaway story, turns into something very fun and enjoyable. It’s definitely one Finn fans will want to check out.

The issue opens on Starkiller Base as Finn is messing around with a mop and his buddy FN-3761. They have a run in with Kylo Ren and Captain Phasma, and they get re-assigned to a special detail to combat some deadly organisms on the base. This leads to some interesting pacing with the story and the panels as it slows down and seeps into horror territory. They get attacked by hostile creatures and Finn’s quick thinking saves his commander’s life, but not without some reprimand. Afterwards, Finn makes a discovery about the creatures they’re dealing with, and things take a turn as Finn is re-assigned yet again, this time to a garbage scowl on a trash run. Finn meets with the pilot of the garbage scowl and their time together is a small but poignant one.

For a one shot, this comic accomplishes a lot. There’s action, humor, movie tie-in’s and character development. We get a glimpse of Finn’s time in the First Order, his road toward desertion, as well as fun little story about some deadly creatures in a creepy tunnel and an interesting pilot running garbage runs for the bad guys. Honestly it’s a great little story and the artwork is just as good. Ramon Rosanas does a fantastic job with capturing the characters, framing the shots, and bringing the scenes to life. It’s the best of both worlds.

With great writing and great artwork, I give Age of Resistance – Finn #1 a five out of five metal bikinis.
