Star Trek: Before Dishonor is a novel in The Next Generation line of Star Trek novels featuring The Borg. It was written by Peter David and was released in November of 2007.
Wow! I am shocked at how good this book is. After reading the Destiny trilogy and Greater Than the Sum (both published after this book) I was worried I would feel Borg fatigue. This book is by far the biggest, most epic, and most well written of the bunch. This might go down as one of my favorite Star Trek books ever made!!!

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Greater Than the Sum is a standalone novel written by Christopher L. Bennett and was released in August of 2008.
What makes this book so interesting is the frame of reference that it has. This book came out after a string of Borg related standalones like Resistance, Death in Winter, Homecoming/Farther Shore, and the ever climactic Before Dishonor. However, it is the prelude to the Destiny Trilogy, the trilogy billed as “The Beginning and the End of the Borg.” This would create a dilemma for Bennett, as his story would need to be really good to stand out in a crowded field. Thankfully, Bennett was up to the task, for this is an excellent book.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Lesser Evil is the fourth book in the Mission Gamma Series. It was written by Robert Simpson, and was released by Pocket Books at Simon and Schuster in November 2002.
This is by far the shortest book in the series. It is so short that it is roughly ⅓-½ the length of the first book. The length of this book feels more like a remnant of the length of the Star Trek books in the 90s while the other three books feel more like the age of Star Trek in the 2000s.
Despite the short length, this is a highly entertaining story. I was hooked to both plots here, and for the first time, the Defiant plot was the most interesting plotline. Defiant notices a strange energy signature, which leads them to an uninhabited planet with not one but two life forms. What transpires is shocking and highly interesting.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Cathedral is the third book in the Mission Gamma Series. It was written by Michael A. Martin and Andy Mangels, and was released by Pocket Books at Simon and Schuster in October 2002.
This book felt very mediocre in some areas, particularly the DS9 storyline. In other areas, such as the Defiant storyline, the story really shined. The disparity between the two really makes the book difficult to rate.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: This Gray Spirit is the third book in the Mission Gamma series for Pocket Books, written by Heather Jarman, and was released in September 2002.
Following up David R. George’s Massive book Twilight would be a challenge for any author, especially to newer authors. Well, this book is Heather Jarman’s debut (one of her only books), and it is a killer book! I had read her book String Theory: Evolution for Voyager, which I thought was just fine, but not a great book. Here she is obviously much more comfortable writing for Deep Space Nine, and it works in her favor.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Twilight is the first book in the Mission Gamma series written by David R. George III and released September 2002.
This was an entertaining start to the Mission Gamma series. I’ve only read one David R. George III book, and that was a pretty weak book. However, this book is a significant step up.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Avatar, is a two part book series written by S.D. Perry and was released in May of 2001 by Pocket Books at Simon and Schuster. Because of the relatively short nature of the books, and given the fact of how tied-together they are, I am writing my review of both parts jointly.
After the Season 7 finale of DS9, the tv show is over, and Pocket Books at Simon and Schuster has the perfect opportunity to take the characters and the story and run wild. They decided to choose S. D. Perry to lead off with this two parter series, and so far it is very good…but not stellar.

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock is a novelization of the movie screenplay written and produced by Harve Bennett and adapted by Vonda N. McIntyre.
I have not reviewed too many movie novelizations before, mostly due to the fact that I generally don’t like them as much as original books. However, after the wonderful experience I had with J.M. Dillard’s The Undiscovered Country novelization, I thought I would give this one a try. The Search for Spock is up there as one of my favorite Star Trek movies, and I thought the book might provide some great insights…which it did!
The first 75 pages of this book is entirely new material. These are new scenes and new viewpoints that we never got in the movie. It does an excellent job of bridging the gap between the end of The Wrath of Khan and Search for Spock. Several characters are given viewpoints that the movie doesn’t, and I quite enjoyed them.

Star Trek: The Original Series: From History’s Shadow is a standalone novel written by Dayton Ward and was released in August 2013.
This is definitely one of the more unique Star Trek books, but I mean that in a good way. It is very difficult to make a Star Trek novel stand out, especially in a novel in “The Original Series” line since there are literally hundreds of TOS books. However, Dayton Ward not only wrote a novel that stands out from the crowd, but is actually really good! Considering Dayton Ward’s track record, that is indeed surprising.
The best part of this book is the setup and execution of it’s plot. This is clearly a love-letter to alien encounter stories popularized by movies like First Encounters of the Third Kind and Race to Witch Mountain. The way Ward goes through American and earth history in order to tell a story of aliens who are secretly on earth observing humans and the humans who are trying to hunt down the aliens was really fun and fascinating.

Articles of the Federation is a Star Trek novel following the politics of President Nanietta Bacco. It was written by Keith R. A. DeCandido and released in June of 2005.
If you’ve ever read a review of this book, you’ll know that everyone equates this book with The West Wing. The West Wing is hands down my favorite television series of all time. This got my attention, as I am a HUGE West Wing fan (we call ourselves Wingnuts I believe?), and may or may not have watched the series all the way through 20+ times. So when I got this book, I wondered how accurate those reviews were.
They were all right. This is The West Wing in Star Trek. There were entire plotlines that I knew exactly which episodes they came from. There were even scenes where I knew which West Wing scene they came from. There were literally lines of dialogue that I knew where he borrowed them from (I told you, I’m a huge West Wing fan). Some people might view this as cheap, but I thought it was brilliant! To the casual fan, Keith is able to tell great stories. To the superfans, he is able to make amazing references.
