Max Reebo’s Pick of the Week: “Heavenly Creatures”

Max Reebo’s pick this week is “Heavenly Creatures” by Band of Skulls.
“Heavenly Creatures” is off a digital EP they released this year of some bonus tracks. It’s a nice mellow song to enjoy, not fast paced or heavy, but not depressing either.

The song is actually a cover of a song originally written and performed by Mississippi musician Skip James. The Lark Poe cover was included on their 2018 album Venom & Faith.

Max Reebo’s Pick of the Week: ‘Kick You When You’re Down’

Max Reebo’s pick this week is “Kick You When You’re Down” off AC/DC’s new album Power Up.
AC/DC is one of my favorite bands. The last time I saw them was in St. Louis for their Rock or Bust tour. After that, they did a show in Kansas City, then Brian Johnson had to quit the tour because of damage to his ear drums. They got Axel Rose to finish off the tour, then their bass player Cliff announced he was retiring. Their long time drummer Phil Rudd was in legal trouble and doing some jail time. It looked really bad for the future of the band.
Then, with all the bad things in 2020, AC/DC got back together and cut a new album. Brian was back. Cliff was back. Phil was back. It was like old times.
Having already listened to the new album a bunch since it came out in October, I’d have to say “Kick You When You’re Down” is my favorite. There’s a lot of good songs, but to me, that one is the stand out.

Max Reebo’s Pick of the Week: 6 Feet

This week’s pick is “6 Feet” by Red Shahan.
I found this one last week while searching for new music. I’ve been on a bit of a county kick lately, and I’ve been mining the soundtrack for the show Yellowstone. Well that led me to Red Shahan.
“6 Feet” is off his new album Culberson County. To date, he’s only released two albums. So far I’ve only listened to the new one, but there’s some good songs on it, and if you like country, it’s worth checking out.
Max Reebo’s Pick of the Week: Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh
October 19, 2020 at 3:48 pm | Posted in Max Reebo Pick of the Week, Music, Regular Feature | Leave a commentThe band Say Hi still has one of the weirdest names I’ve ever come across for a song. It’s “Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh” (that’s eight Oh’s) off of their album appropriately named Oohs and Aahs.

I came across this song a long time ago on Amazon when I was searching for free songs. For those who don’t know, you can find free songs on Amazon. Just search MP3 Music and change the search settings to Price Lowest to High. While it may sound too good to be true, the catch is sifting through all the crappy music to find something worthwhile.
It’s funny, I’ve always liked this song but I’ve never bothered to search to see if the band had any other good songs. I’ll have to remember to check into that. For now, enjoy the tune. It’s bit odd but also a lot of fun.

Max Reebo’s Pick of the Week: Ballad of Miss Kate
October 14, 2020 at 8:21 pm | Posted in Max Reebo Pick of the Week, Music, Regular Feature | Leave a comment
This week’s pick is “Ballad of Miss Kate” by Matt Costa.
Some songs have wicked beats, others have provocative lyrics. Then there are the ones that tell stories. “The Ballad of Miss Kate” by Matt Costa is one of those. Kick back, turn it up, and listen to the story.
“The Ballad of Miss Kate” is off of Songs We Sing, Matt Costa‘s first full length studio album. He hasn’t put out too many albums to date, but if you’re looking for more, I highly recommend his song “TV Gods”.

Max Reebo’s Pick of the Week: “What is Home”
September 15, 2020 at 9:44 am | Posted in Max Reebo Pick of the Week, Music, Regular Feature | Leave a commentMax Reebo’s pick this week is “What is Home” by The Black Crowes.
When most people think of The Black Crowes, they think of “She Talks to Angels” or “Hard to Handle”, but in 2009 they put out an album called Before the Frost…Until the Freeze. On that album, they strayed away from their typical sound for something completely different. Half of the album is almost country. One of my favorites from the album, and indeed, one of my favorites from their entire discography, is “What is Home”.

Max Reebo’s Pick of the Week: “Bliss”
June 16, 2020 at 7:26 pm | Posted in Max Reebo Pick of the Week, Music, Regular Feature | Leave a commentMax Reebo’s pick this week is “Bliss” by Red Sun Rising.
Red Sun Rising is a band I’ve recently come across, even though they’ve been around since 2006. They were formed by high school classmates Mike Protech (vocals, guitar) and Ryan Williams (lead guitar) in Akron, Ohio. They signed their first record deal in 2014 and released Polyester Zeal which hit number 11 on the Billboard Hard Rock album chart. Two singles from that album each reached number 1 on the Mainstream Rock chart. They put out one other album in 2018, Thread, then went on indefinite hiatus in February this year.
Interestingly enough, the band changed their name to The Violent and released a new song last month called “Fly On the Wall.” In addition to their two studio albums, they have two independent albums which were released in 2010 and 2011, as well as three EP’s.
“Bliss” was off Polyester Zeal which featured Mike on vocals and guitar, Ryan Williams on lead guitar, Tyler Valendza on rhythm guitar, Ricky Miller on bass, and Pat Gerasia on drums. If you like that one, I also recommend “Worlds Away”, “Amnesia”, “Emotionless”, and “The Otherside.”

Max Reebo’s Pick of the Week: “Slippin”
May 19, 2020 at 2:17 pm | Posted in Max Reebo Pick of the Week, Music, Regular Feature | Leave a commentMax Reebo’s pick this week is “Slippin” by The Fumes.
It’s a song you’ve never heard by a band you’ve never heard of, most likely. The Fumes is an Australian band formed in 2002 around vocalist and guitarist Steve Merry. Early on they were two man band with drummer Joel Battersby, but now it’s a three man band with Jacob Mann on drums, and Ryan Hazell on bass. They’ve put out a couple albums and EP’s, but they never really hit stardom. Despite that, Steve Merry has some pretty awesome guitar riffs and the band’s song list is worth a listen. From softer songs like “Slippin” to some harder stuff like “Cuddle With the Devil.”
“Slippin” appears on their 2006 album Guns of Gold, back when the band was just Steve and Joel.
