Movie Review: ‘The Gentlemen’

The Gentlemen is Guy Ritchie’s 10th film, and with his penchant for English gangster movies, this one is true to form. While it’s not his best film yet, it is a fun one. Plus it’s Matthew McConaughey’s first outing with Ritchie, so that’s a pretty good sell in itself.

Whether you’ve seen the trailers or not, there’s not much you need to know going in. Basically Matthew McConaughey is a gangster with a criminal empire and he’s the star of the movie. With a great cast of colorful characters, the movie spins a tale of twists, turns, burst of violence, and moments of humor. If you’ve seen any of Ritchie’s gangster/crime films, it’s along those lines. While this one has it’s own flavor, it doesn’t really raise the bar in any regard. However, it does entertain. Movie Review: ‘Birds of Prey’

To put it simply, Birds of Prey was a hot mess. The only good thing about the movie was Harley Quinn. It’s a shame because Margot Robbie is great as Quinn, but it appears DC can’t figure out how to make a good movie around her.

If you are a huge Harley Quinn fan, it’s still worth seeing because, let’s face it, you take what you can get. But there’s some cringe worthy moments in this film. A prime example is the big moment when Black Canary uses her special power and Harley skates out in front, propelled by her voice. It looked bad and it played out poorly. It just…felt…horrible. Some of the dialog was also cringe worthy. And most of the characters were poorly done and underdeveloped. So much time was spent on Harley that most of the other characters suffered. Movie Review: ‘Gretel & Hansel’

Gretel & Hansel is based on the old fairy tale Hansel & Gretel. They flipped the name for the film as it’s a bit different. This story focuses on Gretel. With creepy imagery, music and characters, the film does an excellent job of spinning a tale about a witch and being wary of gifts.

At the heart of the story is Gretel. Played by Sophia Lillis, she does a great job of investing you in the characters and the setting. In this telling of the story, Gretel is the older sister who is taking care of Hansel. They are forced on a journey through the woods, in which they inevitably run into the witch. But there is no gingerbread house in this story. It’s a bit more realistic and definitely more creepy. Throw in some great music, and it really immerses you into the story. Movie Review: ‘The Rhythm Section’

The Rhythm Section is your classic “train them to be a weapon” trope movie with a woman who finds purpose in revenge after losing everything. It doesn’t really do anything new, but it does do a good job at telling a story.

One thing I really liked about this movie is that it feels very grounded. By that I mean it’s not a Jason Bourne or Mission Impossible movie with over the top action or insane fighting abilities. The people in this movie struggle in a fight and it often results in an on the floor struggle rather than some beautifully choreographed fight. Furthermore, the main character isn’t some star pupil who becomes a super spy ninja assassin. She’s a person who struggles and pushes herself. She’s not great at anything, but she’s willing to try and she puts herself out there. On top of all that, she never blindly falls into belief or gets stuck in a narrow field of focus. ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ Spoiler Free Review

I liked it. Seriously, I can think of no better way to summarize it than that. Somehow I managed to stay spoiler free, kept my expectations low by cutting myself off from all the extra trailers and TV spots, went in, and enjoyed it. It was great. Was it the best Star Wars movie ever? No. But it wasn’t the worst, either. It took a little while to settle in, but once I was in, I was having fun. There were surprises, and thankfully, I enjoyed them all.

Going in, I was still on a high from Chapter 7 of The Mandalorian. I really didn’t have any excitement to see The Rise of Skywalker. I stopped watching trailers a long time ago in order to keep things fresh. But doing so also killed the hype. That build up, that anxiousness to see what would happen, I cut myself off from it. So when I sat down and waited for the movie to kick on, there was not a lot of emotion or anticipation. Then you see that Lucasfilm logo pop up, and you know it’s about to begin. There’s that odd feeling of reading a brand new crawl for the first time. There’s the opening shot — an iconic moment for any Star Wars film — and the story starts. Movie Review: ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’

As a kid who grew up on T2: Judgement Day, I’ve always had to check out the new Terminator movies. However, Dark Fate raised the stakes by bringing back Linda Hamilton. Sure, we’ve seen Arnold before. It’s nice to have him back. But Hamilton? That’s a game changer. While Dark Fate isn’t the greatest movie of the year, or the best film in the franchise, it’s a lot of fun and worth checking out.

First, let’s start with the new faces. Mackenzie Davis plays Grace, the augmented human who has Terminator like abilities – super fast, super strong and with tech enhancements that can scan things at a distance or hack computer devices. She’s sent back to protect a girl named Dani Ramos, played by Natalia Reyes. Now to be honest, Dani is a lot more likeable than Grace. Dani is the super soldier with a bit of an attitude and she doesn’t get along that well with Sarah Connor. Dani, on the other hand, is very likeable. She’s not a super soldier, or a bad ass like Sarah Connor, but she’s capable and learning, much like Sarah in the first Terminator. Continue Reading Movie Review: ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’…
