Ewok Corner: The Mystery of Rey’s Parents

For those who haven’t seen the movie yet, there are spoilers below.

Rey Skywalker or Rey Fill-in-the-Blank?

Most people’s initial reactions on seeing Star Wars: The Force Awakens is that Rey is Luke’s daughter. She’s strong in the Force. She’s the main character. She has to be Luke’s daughter, right? But given the details in the film, that might not be the case.

So why isn’t Rey Luke’s kid? First off, when Luke is mentioned to her, she replies that isn’t he a myth? Thus if Luke is her father, she doesn’t know it. We know Rey is waiting for her family to return. That in itself is an interesting line in the movie as it implies Rey might have more than a mother and father that left her. The other detail we have to work with is her Force vision of being left on Jakku. She was very very young at the time, and she was left with the alien junk dealer, Unkar Plutt. This begs the question why Luke would leave his daughter to some thug on Jakku who rations out food for junk? We know Luke left because one of his students turned to the dark side and wiped out his fledgling Jedi academy. Surely if Luke had a kid, Han and Leia would know. There are so many questions raised by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but where will you go to find the answers? One of the books you should check out for those answers is The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens by Abrams Books. Not only does it showcase some of the beautiful concept art for the film, but it dives into behind-the-scenes information on early script ideas, the evolution of characters and locations, and the origins of some of the iconic elements in the film. You’ve watched the movie, but have you listened to the soundtrack? Star Wars: The Force Awakens by John Williams, a journey for the ears. Here’s our take on the soundtrack.

When it comes to orchestral soundtracks, I have to admit I’m not real big on them. It’s not something I normally purchase, seek out, or listen to. I love them in the movies, but listening to them by themselves is a whole different ballgame. Still, I do enjoy music, and after seeing the movie, I wanted to dive into the soundtrack. There’s been plenty of time to see the movie, now it’s time to dive into our full spoiler review of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Last warning, major spoilers below.

J.J. Abrams was tasked to re-launch the Star Wars film saga into a new era. The first in what is being called the sequel trilogy, The Force Awakens was burdened with the weight of a 4 billion dollar investment with the purchase by Disney from George Lucas. Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review. With so many Star Wars: The Force Awakens discussions, keep in mind that most of the podcast episodes contain major spoilers unless otherwise noted. Some are special spoiler free episodes and are labeled as such.

The 602 Club: Episode 61 is their Star Wars: The Force Awakens film discussion which is hosted by Matthew and includes guests Bruce, Darren and John for a multitude of viewpoints. They start with their experience at the theater, Matthew talks about needing time to process the film which brings up an interesting point: is their a case of being too much of a fan hurting the film experience? They talk about the plot being a rip off of A New Hope, the film being divorced from the prequels, yet one of the guests counters that it’s a nice transition to introduce us to a new era. Then they dive into the characters, Poe, Finn–who they compare to Jar Jar as the comic relief but better, BB-8 being just right and the best practical effect in the movie, Maz Kanata being the best CGI character in the movie, Rey the female proto-Luke Skywalker, Han, Luke, Leia, Phasma, Snoke, Hux aka space Hitler, and Ren. Their biggest criticism is the lack of originality in the movie, but Matthew also calls it out for not having enough slow scenes, exposition and explanation. They give their thoughts on the humor, the music, the ships, and the need for multiple viewers. All in all it’s an episode that doesn’t pull any punches. They keep it honest, sometimes brutally so, but it’s a thorough discussion with legitimate criticism but also praise. It’s a long one though at a couple minutes shy of three hours.

Assembly of Geeks: The Force Awakens Spoiler Free Reactions episode starts out with highlights from past shows. Many podcasters have said that it would be fun to go back an listen to all the rumors in the lead up to the film. This episode gives a nice taste of that by highlighting those moments, moving ever closer to the film’s release, and showing the early opinions based on various rumors. It’s pretty fun and a heck of a lot quicker than actually listening to a dozen or more rumor podcasts to get the same experience. Afterwards they have feedback from a bunch of people in the Star Wars community chiming in with their spoiler free thoughts after seeing the movie. Good episode. Continue Reading Podcasts in Review…

Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.

BNN (Bombad Radio): Episode 12.21.2015 covers the box office records for The Force Awakens, speculates on whether the sequels will do as good, they talk about gamers and women, the new Star Trek trailer, Rogue One news, and the usual upcoming movie/video game/comic releases. One bad thing about this episode though is that is some mic issues and it gets kind of bad by the end of the episode.

Brews and Blasters: Episode #50 is their The Force Awakens discussion episode. Yes, everybody will be doing these, but I really hope they all won’t be this long. Brews and Blasters appears to have the high score with 3 hours, 32 minutes and 47 seconds. That…is a long…episode. It is packed with good stuff, though, lots of guests, tons of observations and discussion points, but yeah, I think this would have been way better as two episodes instead of one massive episode. That said, if you can put away the time necessary to chew through this whole thing in one sitting, you’ll definitely get all that after-movie anxiety out of your system. My favorite part, however, is how they approach they’ll be doing spoilers and then BAM, they throw out the biggest spoiler right off the bat to get it out there. Very funny.

Children of the Force: Episode #21 chronicles their day of The Force Awakens–from the disbelief of the wait being over at breakfast, the anticipation during the drive to the theater, their thoughts right before the movie starts while in their seats, and then their thoughts following the movie, plus a review proper afterwards. Great discussion with unique viewpoints as we get Al, Anna and Liam’s reactions and thoughts on the film as well as their thoughts on the IMAX 3D difference. Continue Reading Podcasts in Review…
