Movie Review: ‘Hereditary’

Let me start by saying Hereditary is one of the creepiest, dark, evil movies I’ve seen in a long time. It’s the kind of movie that will stick with you and haunt you at night. You won’t feel quite safe in the dark for a bit. However, this is not a movie for religious people as you will not like the ending.

The movie opens with an obituary for the grandma. That sets the mood of this film. It’s not your standard horror film. All the standard setups, the standard tricks, this movie side steps those. There’s a couple of things you’ve seen before, but the feel of the movie, it’s very different. In fact it’s a really slow burn at first. It introduces you to the characters, yet there are clues even at the beginning that something is not right. There’s more going on than what they’re telling you. And throughout everything, there is an oddness. All of the characters are a little odd, some more so than others. There are dark turns in the movie that keep your interest, but they keep you on your toes not knowing where things are going. In fact the storytellers behind this film keep their cards very close to their chest until the end. That’s when they lay it all out. Continue Reading Movie Review: ‘Hereditary’…

New Release: ‘Finders Keepers’ by Stephen King

Finders Keepers by Stephen King is out today.

“Wake up genius.”

So begins Stephen’s megasuspenseful story about a vengeful reader. The genius is John Rothstein, an iconic author who created a famous character, Jimmy Gold, but who hasn’t published a book for decades. Morris Bellamy is livid, not just because Rothstein has stopped providing books, but because the nonconformist Jimmy Gold has sold out for a career in advertising. Morris kills Rothstein and empties his safe of cash, yes, but the real treasure is a trove of notebooks containing at least one more Gold novel.

Morris hides the money and the notebooks, and then he is locked away for another crime. Decades later, a boy named Pete Saubers finds the treasure, and now it is Pete and his family that Bill Hodges, Holly Gibney, and Jerome Robinson must rescue from the ever-more deranged and violent Morris when he’s released from prison after thirty-five years.

Not since Misery has Stephen played with the notion of a reader whose obsession with a writer gets dangerous. Finders Keepers is spectacular, heart-pounding suspense, but it is also Stephen writing about how literature shapes a life—for good, for bad, forever.

If you like horror novels and Stephen King, then you might want to check out The Troop by Nick Cutter. It’s a story about a boy scout troop on an isolated island…with a monster. As the story progresses, things go bad. Very bad. And with story told so well, you can’t help but continue to see how it will turn out. I have to say, I was really impressed by this book and will definitely be checking out the other books by this author. Click here to read our full review.
