On Station At Celebration: Day 5

April 16, 2019 at 5:50 pm | Posted in Celebration, Conventions, Events, Star Wars | Leave a comment

The final day of Star Wars Celebration Chicago was on a Monday, which was a bit odd. Usually Sunday is the last day and you’re either in a mad rush to leave at the end of the day or you wait till Monday and leave at your leisure. The big panel that day was the 20th anniversary of The Phantom Menace. I didn’t win the lottery for it, and instead of heading to the live stream stage to catch it, I opted to go to the Lucasfilm Publishing Writers Roundtable. I had no idea what to expect, but as a lover of the books it seemed like a good bet. Continue Reading On Station At Celebration: Day 5…

On Station At Celebration: Day 4

Sunday kicked off with The Mandalorian panel, which I saw from the live stream stage. Unfortunately they cut us off at the end, so we missed out on the extended scene they showed and the sizzle reel. We did get to see the behind the scenes video that was shown earlier in the panel. However, I knew the actors would eventually be hitting the live stream stage at some point, and I got lucky as I was there when it happened. Pedro, Gina and Carl all came out, talked a little about the show without giving away anything, and took turns firing the t-shirt canon. Continue Reading On Station At Celebration: Day 4…

On Station At Celebration: Day 3

Saturday for most people kicked off with the Galaxy’s Edge panel, but I went with the Droids and Animatronic Creatures panel instead, which was pretty cool. They showed how the technology for the new films has evolved from The Force Awakens to what they’re currently doing now. For instance, in Solo they utilized a kinetic technology that triggers all kinds of animated animatronic features in the creatures without relying on a puppeteer. The head for the six-eyed alien in Solo‘s sabacc scene used this technology so just looking down, left or right would cause all of the eyes to move in that direction. They would also blink and twitch on their own to make the whole thing appear more life like. A puppeteer could override the motions as needed to pull off certain scenes. On Station At Celebration: Day 2

Day two at Star Wars Celebration Chicago 2019 was the first day of panels, and it all kicked off with the Episode IX panel. I didn’t win any of the panel lotteries, so I headed straight for the Star Wars Live Stream Stage on the exhibit floor which is way better than last time. It’s bigger, a better layout, and there’s more screens. While you don’t get to be in the room with the celebrities, you still get to experience it with a big group of Star Wars fans and get the live reactions of the crowd. The two biggest crowd reactions from the trailer? Lando and the Emperor’s laugh. Continue Reading On Station At Celebration: Day 2…

On Station At Celebration: Day 1

Day one at Star Wars Celebration Chicago 2019 was the easy day. No panels, no stress. It was a day to roam the con floor, explore the convention center, check out all the booths and experience the cool stuff on the Exhibition hall.

It all starts in the outside queue, however. Continue Reading On Station At Celebration: Day 1…

On Station At Celebration: Day 0

Roqoo Depot is in Chicago! For my first day in town, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I’d been to Chicago before, so I’ve already been to the museums (which are great), but there was one place I never got to visit – Galloping Ghost Arcade. I’m glad I went.

Jimmy Mac on Rebel Force Radio has mentioned this place a couple times, so I decided to check it out. For $20 you get in and all the machines are set to free play. That means infinite lives/continues. They have a LOT of arcade machines. They even have another building that’s just pinball, but I didn’t check that one out. I ended up spending all my time in the arcade. They have a wide selection of games from all generations, but I have a sweet spot for the classics, so I had to try all those out. Tetris, the first Mario Bros. game, Donkey Kong, Dragon’s Lair, Joust, Qbert, and they had a bunch of Star Wars games.

Here’s a sample of just one of the many rows of arcade machines they had. Continue Reading On Station At Celebration: Day 0…

Here is this week’s Around the Web news roundup of Star Wars and beyond.

Book News

  • io9 has a look at the Industrial Light & Magic Presents: Making Solo: A Star Wars Story book.
  • In sad news, Vonda N. McIntyre, the author of the Star Wars Legends novel The Crystal Star, has passed away. Vonda did much more than create one of the most controversial Star Wars villains, Waru, she was also the third woman to win a Hugo Award, she wrote the first original Star Trek novel for the Pocket Books line, and she came up with Sulu and Uhura’s first names. She will be missed, but her books shall live on.
  • I missed this but Jedi Bibliotheck spotted it back in early March, but it looks like they’re doing a Haynes manual for the TIE Fighter. It’s set for an October release.

Celebration News

  • The lotteries have been extended to April 8th so if you haven entered yet there is still time.
  • They’ve revealed more Celebration merchandise on the official site.
  • The collecting sites will have a six piece Celebration patch set you can collect.
  • Here’s a look at all the Star Tots which will be available.
  • Del Rey has revealed their author signing times, and which authors will be at the From A Certain Point of View mega signing. DK will also have signings for its authors. Jason Fry posted his schedule here.
  • Dave Dorman is working on a Rogue One painting he hopes to have done for Celebration. There will not be prints of it available. However, Dave is supplying the artwork for the SWCC VIP package limited edition print, which looks gorgeous.
