The Crimson Shadow is the second book in the five book series The Fall which was the epic crossover event in 2013. It was written by Una McCormack and released in September of 2013.

I went into The Fall excited since I’ve heard my Star Trek Book friends rave about it. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with Revelation and Dust, and therefore was nervous about The Crimson Shadow

My fears were unfounded, however, because this is one of the Best Star Trek books I’ve ever read!

This book breaks significantly with its predecessor in that it doesn’t really focus on a main character from the shows or even on one of the ships. Rather, it focuses on Elim Garak, the minor recurring character from Deep Space Nine who is now the Ambassador from the Cardassian Union to the Federation. While he may not be a main character from the shows, his story here is incredibly compelling and will make even strangers to the books endeared to him.

Into the Dark is a YA book that is part of The High Republic initiative, written by Claudia Gray and released in February 2021.

I want to start by saying that I think that Claudia Gray is a fantastic writer. Master and Apprentice and Bloodline are two of my favorite canon novels. I personally think she is best when writing her adult novels. I thought that Leia Princess of Alderaan was a fantastic book and Lost Stars was a great read. Claudia definitely has the best track record of any of the newer authors in the canon.

Unfortunately, Into the Dark is probably her weakest novel, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad.

So far, I’ve focused my reviews on Star Wars novels. However, I’ve decided to do a slight deviation for a while to focus on reading some Star Trek novels I’ve been interested in. I’ll be returning to my reread of the Star Wars canon eventually, but a break is nice every once in a while.

Revelation and Dust is the first book in the five book crossover event Star Trek: The Fall. It was written by David R. George III and was released in August of 2013.

A Test of Courage by Justina Ireland is a brand new middle grade novel in The High Republic series from Disney-Lucasfilm Press. It was released in January 2021.

Middle grade is a difficult genre to write in Star Wars. Star Wars books are known for epic battles, difficult philosophical questions, and references galore. Middle grade books just don’t do that. Mostly because they are aimed at a much younger audience (the publisher’s suggested age range is 8-12), but also because they are naturally shorter. Middle grade books are more the length of an adult novella, and while they have tremendous value to literature, they just are more difficult for me to get into. A Test of Courage is no different.

Light of the Jedi is a first taste of The High Republic, the new publishing initiative from Disney and Lucasfilm. The project spans several multimedia forms, including novels, comics, and the upcoming Disney Plus scripted program The Acolyte. The High Republic brings up to a time period previously unexplored by any Star Wars literature, including the non-canon Expanded Universe – 200 years before the events of the Skywalker Saga. A Star Wars publishing project of this magnitude has not been attempted since the days of the New Jedi Order – the early 2000’s. Thankfully, Light of the Jedi is a solid introduction to a new era of Star Wars, and captures everything that made us fall in love with the Jedi.

Thrawn by Timothy Zahn is the first of many novels in the canon about everyone’s favorite blue skinned, red eyed Chiss. It was released in April of 2017.

Timothy Zahn has a long and famous history with Star Wars. His Heir to the Empire trilogy not only launched the Expanded Universe (now called Legends as we know it) but also created one of Star Wars’ most famous characters – Grand Admiral Thrawn. Since then, Timothy Zahn has written numerous Star Wars novels, some with Thrawn and some without. However, when Lucasfilm launched the canon, all that went out the window. And so, we thought, went the possibility of seeing Thrawn again.

Obviously we were all wrong.
