Star Trek Picard: Second Self is the newest Star Trek novel in the Picard line of novels published by Gallery Books. It was written by Una McCormack and was released in September of 2022.

The first thing I’ll say about this book is that it is a long time coming. We have not had a Star Trek novel in almost ten months since Deep Space Nine: Revenant came out last year. As such, there has been such a drought of Trek publishing that fans have been itching for a new release. This book was scheduled for release in May, but due to paper shortages kept getting pushed back to September. As such, this book has an important role in the history of Star Trek publishing.

Star Trek: Seize the Fire is the second novel in the Typhon Pact series. It was written by Michael A. Martin and was released in December of 2010.

After reading this novel, I can kind of see where they are taking this Typhon pact series. It appears that every book will essentially be another book in that ship’s particular line of novels (TNG, Titan, Aventine, DS9, etc), but there is a throughline current here about the threat about the Typhon Pact, although you’d almost be forgiven if you didn’t realize it in this book.

Star Trek: Zero Sum Game is the first novel in the Typhon Pact line of novels. It was written by David Mack and was released in November of 2010.

David Mack has turned in several amazing books. His Destiny Trilogy is truly legendary for the scope and sheer audacity. His The Fall novel Ceremony of Losses was one of the best thematic books in Star Trek. His A Time to books and his Legacies book were both really stellar! Unfortunately, this book does not live up to the others.

Star Trek: Before Dishonor is a novel in The Next Generation line of Star Trek novels featuring The Borg. It was written by Peter David and was released in November of 2007.

Wow! I am shocked at how good this book is. After reading the Destiny trilogy and Greater Than the Sum (both published after this book) I was worried I would feel Borg fatigue. This book is by far the biggest, most epic, and most well written of the bunch. This might go down as one of my favorite Star Trek books ever made!!!

Book Review: ‘Greater Than the Sum’ by Christopher L. Bennett

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Greater Than the Sum is a standalone novel written by Christopher L. Bennett and was released in August of 2008.

What makes this book so interesting is the frame of reference that it has. This book came out after a string of Borg related standalones like Resistance, Death in Winter, Homecoming/Farther Shore, and the ever climactic Before Dishonor. However, it is the prelude to the Destiny Trilogy, the trilogy billed as “The Beginning and the End of the Borg.” This would create a dilemma for Bennett, as his story would need to be really good to stand out in a crowded field. Thankfully, Bennett was up to the task, for this is an excellent book.

Book Review: ‘Lesser Evil’ by Robert Simpson

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Lesser Evil is the fourth book in the Mission Gamma Series. It was written by Robert Simpson, and was released by Pocket Books at Simon and Schuster in November 2002.

This is by far the shortest book in the series. It is so short that it is roughly ⅓-½ the length of the first book. The length of this book feels more like a remnant of the length of the Star Trek books in the 90s while the other three books feel more like the age of Star Trek in the 2000s.

Despite the short length, this is a highly entertaining story. I was hooked to both plots here, and for the first time, the Defiant plot was the most interesting plotline. Defiant notices a strange energy signature, which leads them to an uninhabited planet with not one but two life forms. What transpires is shocking and highly interesting.

Book Review: ‘Cathedral’ by Michael A. Martin & Andy Mangels

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Cathedral is the third book in the Mission Gamma Series. It was written by Michael A. Martin and Andy Mangels, and was released by Pocket Books at Simon and Schuster in October 2002.

This book felt very mediocre in some areas, particularly the DS9 storyline. In other areas, such as the Defiant storyline, the story really shined. The disparity between the two really makes the book difficult to rate.

Book Review: ‘This Gray Spirit’ by Heather Jarman

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: This Gray Spirit is the third book in the Mission Gamma series for Pocket Books, written by  Heather Jarman, and was released in September 2002.

Following up David R. George’s Massive book Twilight would be a challenge for any author, especially to newer authors. Well, this book is Heather Jarman’s debut (one of her only books), and it is a killer book! I had read her book String Theory: Evolution for Voyager, which I thought was just fine, but not a great book. Here she is obviously much more comfortable writing for Deep Space Nine, and it works in her favor.
