Book Review: ‘Race to Crashpoint Tower’ by Daniel José Older

Race to Crashpoint Tower by Daniel José Older is the second middle grade novel in The High Republic series, released by the Disney-Lucasfilm Press in June 2021.

If you’ve read my review of A Test of Courage, you know that I don’t particularly love middle grade novels, especially in Star Wars. The whole purpose of tie-in novels is to connect the universe together, and to tell a story that children will understand and appreciate. Most of the Star Wars middle grade books are able to tell stories for kids, but they rarely add much to the greater understanding of the universe. However, Race to Crashpoint Tower is much different from its counterparts because it tells a great story while tying in well with The Rising Storm, which is the adult novel from Del Rey which occurs at the same time.

This story focuses on two main characters: Ram Jomaram and Lula Talisola. Older is able to tell a fairly complex story for middle grade by having the two stories be completely separate, and then weave together towards the end. This sets it apart from books like A Test of Courage which had basically one thread that occasionally branched but mostly stayed together.

Into the Dark is a YA book that is part of The High Republic initiative, written by Claudia Gray and released in February 2021.

I want to start by saying that I think that Claudia Gray is a fantastic writer. Master and Apprentice and Bloodline are two of my favorite canon novels. I personally think she is best when writing her adult novels. I thought that Leia Princess of Alderaan was a fantastic book and Lost Stars was a great read. Claudia definitely has the best track record of any of the newer authors in the canon.

Unfortunately, Into the Dark is probably her weakest novel, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad.

Book Review: ‘A Test of Courage’ by Justina Ireland

A Test of Courage by Justina Ireland is a brand new middle grade novel in The High Republic series from Disney-Lucasfilm Press. It was released in January 2021.

Middle grade is a difficult genre to write in Star Wars. Star Wars books are known for epic battles, difficult philosophical questions, and references galore. Middle grade books just don’t do that. Mostly because they are aimed at a much younger audience (the publisher’s suggested age range is 8-12), but also because they are naturally shorter. Middle grade books are more the length of an adult novella, and while they have tremendous value to literature, they just are more difficult for me to get into. A Test of Courage is no different.

Ahsoka by E. K. Johnston, is a young adult novel in the canon that was released in October of 2016.

This book has an interesting place in my heart, because I had already started reading Star Wars books in 2016, but this was the first book that I bought on release day and read in a 24 hour period of time.

After reading Queen’s Shadow and Queen’s Peril, I was disappointed with E. K. Johnston’s writing as a whole. When I realized I’d have to reread Ahsoka, I was afraid I wouldn’t like it now as much as I did back in 2016.

I was wrong.

The Clone Wars: Stories of Light and Dark is a short story collection, edited by Jennifer Heddle, and released in August of 2020.

I am taking time out of my usual bi-weekly reread through the canon to review the newest short story collection from Disney-Lucasfilm Press. As a huge fan of The Clone Wars series, I had high hopes for this book. And the authors involved *mostly* delivered. Below I very briefly review every story (including a letter rating), followed by an overall review at the end. Continue Reading Book Review: ‘The Clone Wars: Stories of Light and Dark’…
