Darth Vader and the Ninth Assassin was a five issue mini-series from Dark Horse Comics featuring a brand new Star Wars writer (Tim Siedell) and several new Star Wars artists. For issues #1, #3 and #4, Stephen Thompson handled the penciled artwork, while Ivan Fernandez did the pencils for #3 and #5. Mark Irwin did the inks for #1 and #2, while sharing the ink work with Drew Geraci and Jason Gorder on issue #4. Denis Freitas picked up the inks for issues #3 and #5. For all five issues, Michael Atiyeh handled the colors with Ariel Olivetti doing all the cover art.

Whether you liked the story or not, the series featured some really nice artwork and the artist posted quite a bit of the material online. Below you’ll find a collected gallery of the preliminary artwork, the pencilled artwork, the inked artwork, the final colors and the cover art. For our final art gallery highlight for John Jackson Miller’s Kenobi, we are featuring the star of the book, Obi-Wan. From his beginnings as a young Jedi, to his exile on Tatooine, we present the art of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The package is delivered.

I hope you can read my thoughts, Master Qui-Gon: I haven’t heard your voice since that day on Polis Massa, when Master Yoda told me I could commune with you through the Force. You’ll remember that we decided I should take Anakin’s son to his relatives for safekeeping. That mission is now accomplished.

If feels so strange, behing here, at this place and in this circumstance. Years ago, we removed one child from Tatooine, thinking him to be the galaxy’s greatest hope. Now I have returned one–with the same goal in mind. I hope it goes better this time. Because the path to this moment has been filled with pain. For the whole galaxy, for my friends–and for me.

I still can’t believe the Jedi Order is gone–and the Repbulic, corrupted and in the hands of Palaptine. And Anakin, corrupted as well. The holovids I saw of him slaughtering the Jedi younglings in the Temple still haunt my dreams…and shatter my heart into pieces, over and over again.

But after the horror of children’s deaths, a child may bring hope, as well. It’s as I said: the delivery is made. I’m standing on a ridge with my riding beast–a Tatooine eopie–looking back at the Lars homestead. Owen and Beru Lars are outside, holding the child. The last chapter is finished: a new one has begun. Kenobi, prologue

For a desolate looking wasteland of sand, Tatooine actually has a variety of lifeforms, some of which show up in John Jackson Miller’s Kenobi. From dewbacks and banthas to sarlaccs and krayt dragons, below you’ll find a visual gallery of the wildlife of Tatooine.

Annileen slammed across the monster’s back as the weight fell away. She saw Kallie and the rider atop the eopie, which was slowing now from the additional burden. No way would it carry two for long, nor three for a second. Snit was her problem. Recovering, she looked forward. It was just a matter of finding the–

Krakk! Snit’s rear foot struck a hold. Annileen went somersaulting forward, even as the impossible mass of the dewback went aloft underneath her. She saw light as the suns flashed before her eyes–and then darkness as the bulk of the dewback eclipsed them.

And then, nothing. -Kenobi, Chapter Five.

With Kenobi nineteen days away, we’re counting down with a series of theme galleries showcasing important elements from the book. This week we present the Tusken Raiders of Tatooine.

“The first Sand People had watched the battle in the sky. The suns, dually covered in shame, turned their wrath on the witnesses. The sky-brothers’ gaze tore at the mortals, burning through flesh to reveal their secret selves. The Sand People saw their shadows on the sands of Tatooine, and listened. The younger spirit urged attack. The elder told them to hide. Counsels, from the condemned.

The Sand People were condemned, as well. Always walking with the twin shadows of sacrilege and failure beside them, they would hide their faces. They would fight. They would raid. And they would run.” Kenobi, Chapter One

With the release of Troy Denning’s Crucible getting nearer, we thought it would be a good time to take a look at the cover art. Thus we kick off another edition of our Roqoo Depot Galleria series highlighting the art of Star Wars.

All of them feature artwork by Cliff Nielsen (who also did the covers for Outbound Flight, Vector Prime, Balance Point, Star By Star, Destiny’s Way, The Unifying Force, the Dark Nest Trilogy and the Jedi Apprentice series) and are designed by Scott Biel.

It all started with this preliminary cover… Continue Reading The Star Wars Art of ‘Crucible’…
