‘The Rise of Skywalker’ Spoiler Free Review

I liked it. Seriously, I can think of no better way to summarize it than that. Somehow I managed to stay spoiler free, kept my expectations low by cutting myself off from all the extra trailers and TV spots, went in, and enjoyed it. It was great. Was it the best Star Wars movie ever? No. But it wasn’t the worst, either. It took a little while to settle in, but once I was in, I was having fun. There were surprises, and thankfully, I enjoyed them all.

Going in, I was still on a high from Chapter 7 of The Mandalorian. I really didn’t have any excitement to see The Rise of Skywalker. I stopped watching trailers a long time ago in order to keep things fresh. But doing so also killed the hype. That build up, that anxiousness to see what would happen, I cut myself off from it. So when I sat down and waited for the movie to kick on, there was not a lot of emotion or anticipation. Then you see that Lucasfilm logo pop up, and you know it’s about to begin. There’s that odd feeling of reading a brand new crawl for the first time. There’s the opening shot — an iconic moment for any Star Wars film — and the story starts.

Now this story took a little bit before I was seeped into it. It was a good 10 or 15 minutes before I started to settle in and get swept away with the characters. There was a little awkwardness at first. The story kicked into high gear and threw a lot at the audience. Things moved fast. But at some point, it began to meld. The theater and the audience disappeared and I became one with the story unfolding on the screen. After that, it’s all about the memorable moments. The big reveals. And there are reveals. There are answers. Fans have been speculating all these years about what was the real story, and what would happen. Now I can only speak for myself, but there were a few things I kind of wanted to happen, and lo and behold they did happen. So in that case I was very happy. I’ve heard a lot of fans speculate about the movie on various podcasts, so I could see some people being disappointed. It’s probably not going to satisfy everyone. But in the end, it satisfied me.

It’s a no brainer that your’e going to have to go see the film. That’s not the question. If you’re reading this and still avoiding spoilers, you’re still invested in the film. You want to know how many Star Wars fans were pleased with the outcome? Which Star Wars fans were happy? But in the end, the real question is whether it made you happy, and in that case, you’ll just have to go and see for yourself. Personally, I really enjoyed it. I loved the way the story unfolded. I loved the major turns, and I loved the end. We could go on and on with speculation on how it could have been if this or that happened, but what we got is what we got. You like it or leave it. As is, I give The Rise of Skywalker a four out of five metal bikinis and look forward to seeing it again.
