Movie Review: ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’

As a kid who grew up on T2: Judgement Day, I’ve always had to check out the new Terminator movies. However, Dark Fate raised the stakes by bringing back Linda Hamilton. Sure, we’ve seen Arnold before. It’s nice to have him back. But Hamilton? That’s a game changer. While Dark Fate isn’t the greatest movie of the year, or the best film in the franchise, it’s a lot of fun and worth checking out.

First, let’s start with the new faces. Mackenzie Davis plays Grace, the augmented human who has Terminator like abilities – super fast, super strong and with tech enhancements that can scan things at a distance or hack computer devices. She’s sent back to protect a girl named Dani Ramos, played by Natalia Reyes. Now to be honest, Dani is a lot more likeable than Grace. Dani is the super soldier with a bit of an attitude and she doesn’t get along that well with Sarah Connor. Dani, on the other hand, is very likeable. She’s not a super soldier, or a bad ass like Sarah Connor, but she’s capable and learning, much like Sarah in the first Terminator.

With the returning cast, you have Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor and Arnold Schwarzenegger as Carl. Yeah, he’s a Terminator named Carl. It’s funny and it works. And he does a great job at returning to the role and doing something a little different. But Hamilton, for me, was the one who really shines. She’s back as the bad ass terminator slayer like she never missed a step from T2 and it’s great. It’s like getting Ripley back from Aliens. Combining all these characters and actors together, you get a good cast.

There’s also a new villain at play. The new Terminator is called a REV-9 and is played by Gabriel Luna. It’s kind of a fusion of the Terminators we’re familiar with. It’s part liquid machine and part robot skeleton, able to separate and attack as two different robots or fuse together to attack as one super powered machine. It can do some interesting things and it leads to lots of over the top special effects. Some are cool, some are a bit much, but it’s still a fun action flick.

Without spoiling anything, Terminator: Dark Fate captures the nostalgia of T2 and brings audiences a new chapter in the franchise. If you liked T2, you’re going to have to go see this one. You’ll enjoy it. I give it a four out of five metal bikinis.
