Movie Review: ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’

Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah all get some serious action in this movie as they fight each other for dominance of the world while all the tiny humans run for their lives or get smashed to pieces. But there are humans in this movie, and they do get a lot of screen time. Thankfully it’s a great cast of memorable B-list actors who keep the entire film entertaining and interesting. Don’t expect a super intelligent, deep movie, however, if you’re here for fun, you’re in luck.
One thing I liked about Godzilla: King of the Monsters is that it builds off of both Gareth Edwards Godzilla movie and Kong: Skull Island. There’s no erasure of the previous films and they’re all integrated into one narrative universe. This film even builds on the story to setup the next film in the franchise, King Kong vs. Godzilla. While you only get a glimpse of Kong in this movie, there is plenty of screen time for the other monsters, even some of the monsters other than the big four who get top billing. They integrate the whole Monarch group whose monitoring and studying the monsters with the idea of a hollow earth theory, and the idea that these giant monsters somehow help bring balance to the planet despite all the destruction they cause. By using those other films to help develop the story, it adds some serious momentum for the world their building. And as a fan of all three films, I’m really enjoying what they’re doing.
