Movie Review: ‘Avengers: Endgame’
April 27, 2019 at 10:50 am | Posted in Movies, Reviews | 1 CommentEleven years in the making, over the course of 22 films, Avengers: Endgame brings the satisfying conclusion to an epic event. There’s laughs, there’s emotional moments that might make you teary eyed, and there’s the end and beginning of story arcs for some of our favorite characters. With three hours of cinematic content, Endgame delivers.
Keeping this spoiler free, it’s amazing what Marvel was able to accomplish. I mean think about it – 22 movies. That’s almost as much as the entire James Bond franchise (26 films) to build up and create a cinematic climax for the Marvel superheroes. Through that decade of film making, they introduced us to characters, assembled them into the Avengers, and pitted them against threats that put the fate of the world at risk. With Endgame, the universe has been dealt a blow by the most powerful threat yet – Thanos. Going into this movie, the Avengers have already lost. Thanos, the badguy, won. And yet the battle isn’t over, not while superheroes still exist.
With the sheer number of characters you have to juggle to tell a story like this, they somehow managed to pull it off. They told a story that gives numerous a moment to shine. Some of those characters take the spotlight, and while they take turns doing so, they keep us entertained and fulfill our desires to see these heroes come to life. Not everyone gets a lot of screen time, there’s just too many characters at play, but the film does its best to bring everyone into the game. There’s battles, there’s adventures, there’s problems for them to overcome and emotional decisions for them to grapple with. And thankfully, it all leads to a satisfying end.
While there are no mid or end credit scenes for Endgame, in a way, it’s a fitting way to symbolize the end of this journey. If you do wait until the end of the credits, there’s a very small audio easter egg, one that may be a nod to the film that started this whole thing off, and a moment that makes you think where the Marvel universe will go next. For the end of this journey, I give Avengers: Endgame a five out of five metal bikinis.
