On Station At Celebration: Day 0

Roqoo Depot is in Chicago! For my first day in town, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I’d been to Chicago before, so I’ve already been to the museums (which are great), but there was one place I never got to visit – Galloping Ghost Arcade. I’m glad I went.

Jimmy Mac on Rebel Force Radio has mentioned this place a couple times, so I decided to check it out. For $20 you get in and all the machines are set to free play. That means infinite lives/continues. They have a LOT of arcade machines. They even have another building that’s just pinball, but I didn’t check that one out. I ended up spending all my time in the arcade. They have a wide selection of games from all generations, but I have a sweet spot for the classics, so I had to try all those out. Tetris, the first Mario Bros. game, Donkey Kong, Dragon’s Lair, Joust, Qbert, and they had a bunch of Star Wars games.

Here’s a sample of just one of the many rows of arcade machines they had.

And here are some of the ones I played.

As a kid, I never had the opportunity to go to an arcade, and there weren’t that many arcade machines in my home town, so this was my first time playing all these games. It was surprisingly a lot of fun. It was neat trying out the older games and seeing what they were able to do with limited graphics. Some of them are very inventive. One thing I could not figure out was how to play Dragon’s Lair. The scenes go to quick and it’s very hard to figure out what you’re suppose to do. Dragon’s Lair II was a bit easier as they give you visual hints about what options there are. It actually wasn’t that fun. But the old Atari Star Wars? That was a blast!

Afterwards, I checked out the convention center. This is what it looks like before the storm of massive crowds.

To cap the day off, I headed to my favorite pizza place – Lou Malnati’s. Buttercrust deep dish with pepperoni and sausage. The sausage cannot be beat.

Looking forward to tomorrow which will be the exhibit floor day (no panels). So far it’s off to a good start.
