Max Reebo’s Pick of the Week: “Mickey Mouse and the Goodbye Man”

Max Reebo’s pick this week is “Mickey Mouse and the Goodbye Man” by Grinderman.

Grinderman is a strange band of off key sounds combined into a symphony of intriguing chords. Nick Cave is on the vocals with some bizarre lyrics backed by Warren Ellis, Martyn P. Casey, and Jim Sclavunos on the instruments.

Grinderman was formed as a side project to the band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (which all four members are a part of). Their name came from a Memphis Slim song “Grinder Man Blues.” They only released two albums, Grinderman (2007) and Grinderman 2 (2010), before announcing they were done in 2011. One of my favorite songs from their two albums is the raucous “Mickey Mouse and the Goodbye Man.” It’s a song about werewolves, two brothers, and a killing spree.

It’s a symphony of noise that might not be for everyone.
