Max Reebo’s pick this week is “Choctaw Bingo” by James McMurtry.

It may be true for many, and it certainly was for me. “Choctaw Bingo” is one of the best songs I’ve come across from a band I’ve never heard before. If you’ve never had the good fortune to hear James McMurtry, then it’s time to turn up the speakers for a spectacular jam about meth, guns, family, and the Midwest.

Born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1962, his mother was an English professor and his father the famous novelist Larry McMurtry (Lonesome Dove). Singer, songwriter, guitarist, and actor, James plays with his band The Heartless Bastards. Their first album, Too Long in the Wasteland, came out in 1989. Since then they’ve turned out twelve albums.

“Choctaw Bingo” appeared on their sixth album Saint Mary of the Woods in 2002. It’s just one of the many great songs by James McMurtry.
