Movie Review: ‘Captain Marvel’

March 29, 2019 at 12:43 am | Posted in Movies, Reviews | Leave a comment

So I finally managed to catch Captain Marvel while it’s still on the big screen and I enjoyed it. I wouldn’t put it in my top ten Marvel movies, but it’s fun, there’s lots of action, and there’s some good characters moments. The story…it’s a little sloppy, and honestly, it’s the weakness of the movie, but it’s not that bad. At this point all of the Marvel movies are kind of must see as part of the focus on Avengers, Infinity War and Endgame. From that perspective, is it something you still have to see? Yes.

Keeping light on spoilers, you learn who Captain Marvel is and what her powers are in this movie. That’s going to be a necessity for Endgame and getting the most enjoyment out of her character. Without the groundwork laid in this movie, there’s no telling how Endgame will play out if that’s your first exposure to the character. However, seeing Captain Marvel also requires some homework. Before you go see this movie, you’re going to want to watch Guardians of the Galaxy. Some of the races/species, characters, ships and technology from that movie play a role in this one. It’s a connected universe and it’s constantly building off itself, which means those shared elements have more value if you’ve seen the whole story behind them. Max Reebo’s Pick of the Week: “Medicine Man”

March 25, 2019 at 12:01 am | Posted in Max Reebo Pick of the Week, Music, Regular Feature | Leave a comment

Max Reebo’s pick this week is “Medicine Man” by Dorothy.

Dorothy is an Los Angeles band that formed around vocalist Dorothy Martin. In 2014 she released “After Midnight” with guitarist Mark Jackson, bassist Gregg Cash, and drummer Zac Morris. From there they continued to release singles and each garnered success, leading up to an EP (Dorothy, 2014) and then a full album (Rockisdead, 2016). The band changed lineups for their second album, 28 Days in the Valley (2018). Their current lineup is Dorothy Martin (vocals), Owen Barry (guitar), Eli Wulfmeier (guitar), Eliot Lorango (bass), and Jason Ganberg (drums). In my opinion, their second album isn’t as good as their first, but it’s still worth a listen.

“Medicine Man” is off their first album and is a great song. That entire album is pretty solid with great track after great track, most of them much more up beat and classic rock than “Medicine Man” but this one adds some variety to the playlist. Enjoy!
