Movie Review: ‘Strangers: Prey at Night’

Strangers: Prey at Night is yet another example of a bad sequel and a terrible horror film. The thing is, I kind of liked the first movie. It was a truly chilling film that followed a family being terrorized by a group of psychotic murderers. The ending of the film was something that stuck with you afterwards with it’s cold brutality. The sequel, however, achieves nothing. There’s no terror. There’s nothing memorable. It’s not even mediocre.

The movie kicks off with the strangers killing some old people in a trailer. It’s nothing too shocking or scary, thus kicking off the mediocrity of the film. Afterwards it picks up with the victims of the movie. There’s a family consisting of a mother played by Christina Hendricks, a father played by Martin Henderson, a brother played by Lewis Pullman (yes, he’s Bill Pullman’s son), and a sister played by Bailee Madison. Bailee is the delinquent daughter who is doing terrible at school so her parents are going to send her to boarding school. Thus she resents her parents. For some reason they head to a trailer park next to a lake where an aunt and uncle live (the two people killed at the beginning of the film). They arrive at dark and it doesn’t take long for the strangers to show up. They start killing people pretty quick. Unlike the first movie, they don’t start toying around with their victims until there’s only a couple left. In contrast to the first film, though, some of the strangers die in this movie.

Now for the issues. First off, the victims is this movie are idiots. They’re helpless, they’re plagued by bad decisions, and they make you want to yell at the screen for how dumb they are. They follow all of the stereotypical horror tropes. The problem is, this isn’t suppose to be one of those “it’s so bad it’s funny” horror movies. This is suppose to be serious terror. But it doesn’t work. The movie doesn’t give you time to bond with any of the victims, and once they’re thrown in the fray, they behave like idiots. They constantly split up, they don’t pay attention to their surroundings, they let their guard down, and when they get guns they try to lose them as quickly as possible. It’s ridiculous. Even the strangers are stupid as they stand there and wait to be killed at several points in the movie.

As bad as all of that is, the cherry on the cake for me was the music. The first Strangers movie had a some good music. It was creepy and perfect for the film. It added to the tension. In this movie, the music is awful. The song selection is just outright terrible. Seriously, they could have salvaged a couple scenes in this movie if they could have just picked some good songs. Instead they squandered every single one.

As someone who is kind of a horror fan, this film just plain sucked. Don’t waste your money on this one. I wouldn’t even recommend wasting your time if this ever ends up on Netflix. I give it a half of a bikini out of five.
