Movie Review: ‘Thor: Ragnarok’

Ragnarok changes things up from the past two Thor movies and makes it feel a lot more like Guardians of the Galaxy. Yet the film doesn’t lose itself in doing something new. Instead, it takes Thor to a new level with a film that’s nothing but entertainment from beginning to end.
First off, I did not realize that this movie was directed by the guy who did Hunt for the Wilderpeople. If you haven’t seen that movie, I recommend it. It’s a lot of fun with some great characters. It’s no wonder that Thor: Ragnarok captures that same magic of fun characters and an enjoyable adventure. There’s a great mix of seriousness and humor as the drama and the laughs play off each other to great effect. In turn, the characters shine as they also play off each other in the various situations that arise in this film. Whether it’s Loki and Thor dealing with Doctor Strange, the Grandmaster or each other, they feed off one another’s performances to create a spectacle that you can’t help but smile or laugh at. It’s a chemistry that feels so natural that it works wonderfully. And yet some how they introduce a bunch of new characters into that equation and capture they same level familiarity and fun. Sure the Hulk is in there, as is Idris Elba as Heimdall and Anthony Hopkins as Odin. But new characters like Korg (voiced by the director, Taika Waititi), Valkyrie played by Tessa Thompson, and Cate Blanchett’s Hela all step in seamlessly to the world of Thor.
