Movie Review: ‘Mother!’

Mother! may very well be one of the strangest movies I’ve ever seen. It’s also a fine example of how a movie trailer can leave an audience completed unprepared for the film they are about to experience. This is not a horror movie. It is not a movie about an evil cult. Instead, it’s a is story used as a representative of the events of the bible. A story within a story, and quite possibly stories hidden within those. It’s a complex movie filled with strangeness and probably not for everyone. However, I kind of liked it.

On the surface, this film starts out as a story of a poet struggling to write again and his wife rebuilding their house. They are visited by a stranger, Ed Harris, who mistook their house for a bed and breakfast. The poet offers to let him stay the night, even though his wife is against it. Eventually the stranger’s wife shows up, then their two kids. Time passes and the poet begins to write again. His new poem is a smashing success which earns him tons of publicity with fans showing up to the house to see him. Then things get chaotic and go off the rails crazy. Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review. There’s also a new porg champion this week.

Beltway Banthas: Episode 39 goes from discussing a living constitution to Force Friday. They discuss Trevorrow being fired (pre-J.J. announcement), then they talk about the novel Inferno Squad. They do go into spoilers, so fair warning. One thing that makes their discussion unique is some of the real life comparisons they make to extremist groups around the world.

Porg Count: 4, Runtime: 1 hour 5 minutes, Rating: Good episode

Blabba the Hutt: Episode 34 features guest Craig Miller as Jamie talks to him about his work on Star Wars. Craig talks about meeting Charlie Lippencott, marketing the film at conventions, Kenner and the empty box, marketing tricks, leveraging the comics, seeing a rough cut in November, directing the Star Wars episode of Sesame Street and operating R2-D2, the 800 number for Empire, overloading AT&T’s system and leveraging that for extra marketing, what he’s doing now and other stories. Great interview.

Porg Count: 0 (Porg Free), Runtime: 1 hour 6 minutes, Rating: Great episode

Blast Points: Episode 91 starts out with the J.J. Abrams news, then they dive deep into Star Wars by taking a closer look at the sound mixes for A New Hope. They discuss the different sound mixes and go through the history of all of them, from the theatrical release all the way to the Blu-ray. They compare the Dolby mix to the Mono mix and play audio clips to illustrate the differences. You might be surprised which ones your more familiar with.

Porg Count: 1, Runtime: 1 hour 8 minutes, Rating: Fun episode Continue Reading Podcasts in Review…
