Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.

’80s All Over: July 1981 is an interesting look at all the movies that came out in July 1981. Hosted by Drew McWeeny and Scott Weinberg, the podcast covers all of the movies of the 80’s month-by-month. In this episode they cover a lot of movies, from ones you may never have heard of like Force Five, Gas and Endless Love, to more memorable films like Escape From New York, The Fox and the Hound and Arthur. Whether the film was good or bad, they share their opinions, some details and facts on each movie, and give listeners an idea of films they might want to check out and ones to avoid. If you’re into movies, you might want to give this one a try. FYI there is adult language so expect F bombs.

Blast Points: Episode 75 covers the new leaked Han Solo pics, The Last Jedi Vanity Fair content, a listener questions on the Gungan peace globe, an R2 song, and reviews. Fun packed episode, especially with all the Vanity Fair discussion which is the main focus of this one.

Coffee With Kenobi: Episode 69 features guests Ryder Waldron and Matt Moore as they talk toys, Canto Bight, the Variety Fair pics, and then they talk with Jeff Dwoskin about Star Wars, Jar Jar and the Clone Wars. Dan’s audio is a little quiet, otherwise a good episode.

Databank Brawl: Episode 52 sets R5-D4 against Greedo in a dual on Corellia at the space Olive Garden with Dave Rendar. Fun episode with a good Greedo impression.

Fauxthentic History: Beta Ray Bill Part 1 covers the weird horse looking version of Thor you may or may not have seen before in the comics. They talk about the character’s origin and history, his hammer, his adventures with Thor and ending up with Lady Sif. As someone who knew nothing about Bill except having seen the character a couple times, this was a cool episode.

Fly Casual: Episode 138 starts off with NSYNC, then they get into reviews for Rogue One #2, Screaming Citadel #1, Poe Dameron #15, and they have a book discussion on Legends books they’d recommend and canon books they’d recommend. Good suggestions for new readers. Afterwards they get into rumors for Han Solo with newly leaked pictures, Episode VIII toy leaks and other Episode VIII rumors. Funny episode.

Full of Sith: Episode CCXVII features Bryan, Holly and NASCAR driver Ryan Blaney as they talk about Star Wars. Afterwards, Bryan and Holly have a discussion on books. Good episode.

Full of Sith: Episode CCXVIII is hosted by Bryan, Holly and Bobby Roberts as they talk about the reviews for Star Wars back in 1977, go off on Blade Runner and Hobbit tangents, discuss how Rogue One changed with multiple viewings, they cover the Vanity Fair content, and share their thoughts on Episode VIII and IX. Good episode with lots of great discussions.

I Was There Too: The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy with Ahmed Best is a fantastic interview. It’s done in two parts, the first part being a live segment done on stage, and the second part being a one-on-one interview in the studio. Ahmed talks about his thoughts on Jar Jar’s fate in the book Empire’s End, the Darth Jar Jar fan theory, what it was like auditioning for Jar Jar, the mocap suit, working with Liam Neeson, the submarine scene, having trouble with the “Weesa goin’ home” line, pitching ideas for the Yoda fight and eventually writing out the fight, the hot tea incident, meeting Michael Jackson with George Lucas, and other awesome Star Wars stories. This one is a must listen and my pick of the week. Fair warning, though, there is some adult language.

Lattes With Leia: Episode 17 starts with the usual discussion as they cover what they’re drinking and what they’ve been up to. They talk about the IMAX VR experience, Guardians of the Whills and Rebel Rising (no spoilers), a Star Wars dinner, and then they move on into some general topics like seeing Star Wars the first time, getting into it, some fun Star Wars stories like stormtrooper pizza boxes, thoughts on A New Hope, plans for May 25th and more. Good episode with a lot of fun discussions.

Rebel Force Radio: Episode 5.26.2017 features Jimmy, Jason and Billy Mac as they talk about the first time they saw Star Wars, the 1977 reviews for it, breaking records, establishing benchmarks, Marsha Lucas’ influence on the films, and some trivia. They also cover the Vanity Fair content, the ABC interview, rumors, character names, and they talk with Tom Spina about Star Wars furniture, the cantina and the Canto Bight aliens. Good episode.

Skywalking Through Neverland: Episode 170 features an interview with Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz as he talks about making Star Wars. Pretty cool even though the audio isn’t the greatest. They also talk with Ric Peralta from LiningUp.Net about The Last Jedi, and they have listener messages sharing their Star Wars memories for the 40th anniversary. Good episode.

Star Wars 7×7: Episode 1055 goes over the Vanity Fair covers and what is revealed like Phasma’s spear, Kylo’s scar and Luke’s glove.

Star Wars 7×7: Episode 1061 covers the Vanity Fair pictures and Pablo’s comments.

Star Wars Action News: Episode 494 they talk about Celebration stories, the 40th anniversary, collectible news, the debacle of the Celebration autograph lines, thoughts on the Celebration store, how well the Hallmark line was handled, the fan figure poll, Hascon, collecting memories, and a book review for Thrawn. Still one of the best podcasts for Star Wars toy news.

TechnoRetro Dads: Episode 5.22.2017 is a tribute to Star Wars and Casey Kasem’s American Top 40 as they play Star Wars parodies of 1977 songs. There’s some droid country, Jawa funk and rock ‘n roll all complete with Star Wars lyrics. It makes for one fun episode. Definitely give this one a listen as Steve Glosson fills in the shoes of Casey Kasem.

TechnoRetro Dads: Episode 5.29.2017 has graduation jokes, movie sequel news for Spaceballs 2 and Top Gun 2, then they talk about Roger Moore, his movies, and The Spy Who Loved Me. They also cover Dig Dug in the retro arcade, touch on some cereal stuff and The Dark Crystal prequel movie. Good episode.

The Deucecast Movie Show: Episode 278 continues their showdown for the best year of movies ever tournament. First up they play a new game, Shazbazzar brings up the 1989 vs 1982 match for another look, then it’s 2015 vs 1986, and 1984 vs 1989. Somewhere in there they give a callout to Scott Ryfun to help them pick the winners. Fun episode.

The Geek Directive: TV Previews & Guardians 2 Reviews starts off with stuff they’ve been up to, new tv show announcements, a tv pop quiz, geek fashion spotlight from Johnamarie Marcias, some discussion of Wonder Woman, the animated Deadpool show, their reviews of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and the passing of Powers Booth. Good episode.

The Geek Directive: Star Wars Turns 40 & X-Men Turns Scary starts with the trigger word game, they talk with guest Andy (Holy Batcast) about Wonder Woman, which he was able to see early. They keep the discussion completely spoiler free. They also talk about the X-Men standalone horror movie, what their lives would be like without Star Wars, a recent Star Wars documentary, Star Wars toys and some other news headlines. Good episode.

The Sandcrawler: Episode 26 Dan and Mike talk a little Celebration, a little 40th anniversary, some news, the Vanity Fair pictures, and they talk with guest Tom Berges about the original trilogy, his thoughts on modern figures and the prequels, and they do a fun 21 question rundown orchestrated by Dan. Great episode.

TSW Kessel Run: Episode 5.24.2017 Marc covers the Vanity Fair magazine covers for The Last Jedi, as well as John Boyega’s comments on Finn. Good episode.

Matt Keegan joins them as they talk about what books they’d like to see with Clonetrooper storylines, and they talk a little Celebration.

  1. If you like Thor and Walt Simonson, you may enjoy the limited run podcast The Lightning and the Storm. There’s a lot of enthusiasm and less swearing than on Jay and Miles X-Plain the X-Men.
