Movie Review: ‘Ant-Man’

Marvel has been on a role ever since Iron Man came out in 2008. After seeing Guardians of the Galaxy, a film about a bunch of characters I’ve never heard of, I thought maybe they could do no wrong. But Ant-Man? How could that be any good? What kind of superhero has ant powers? Well, go figure, they still can do no wrong. Ant-Man is good.

The thing that made Iron Man so good was Robert Downey Jr.’s performance as Tony Stark. He made that movie. Audiences fell in love with his character. The same can be said for Paul Rudd. What Downey did with Iron Man, Rudd does with Ant-Man. He’s funny, he can be serious, he lives the character. When watching the film, I believed he was Ant-Man. I never questioned it. Throw it great performances from Michael Pena, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas and even the bad guy, Corey Stoll, who just oozes slime ball. He’s the kind of villain you just love to hate. They all come together to make a great movie that, in my case, beat expectations.

Watching the movie trailers, I was seriously on the fence about the film. I actually didn’t plan on seeing it until I started hearing people talk about how much they enjoyed it on some of the podcasts I listen to. It provided just the right amount of motivation, so I decided to go give it a chance. One thing I really appreciated about the movie was that it’s very different thematically from the likes of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. That movie felt very serious and dramatic. It’s also different than the Avengers because the stakes aren’t as high and there’s a much tighter focus. Instead of juggling a dozen superheroes, there’s Ant-Man and some cameos. Instead of being gritty and dramatic, it’s fun and entertaining. There’s action, but there’s also lots of character moments that really enrich the film. Heck, just hilarious scenes with Michael Pena make the film brighter and more enjoyable. To be honest, this may be the closest Marvel has come to re-creating the magic of the first Iron Man film. It’s got all the right ingredients and works great.

So, can a movie about a guy with ant powers be worth seeing? The answer is yes. He can shrink, he can kick-ass, and he can make you laugh. The entire cast puts in solid performances and the whole thing plays out like the perfect Marvel movie. There’s even some nice ties to the greater Marvel world as this is very much a place where the Avengers exist. Expect to see Falcon come into play as Ant-Man runs in with the big boys.

In the end, I give Ant-Man a five out of five metal bikinis. It’s great movie, and if you haven’t watched it yet, catch it before it’s gone.
