Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.
Bombad Radio: Episode 188 starts out with some Star Wars: Battlefront rumors then cuts over to their interview with voice actor Trevor Devall. This one turns out to be a great interview. Trevor talks about some of the roles he’s done, voicing Rocket Raccoon, dubbing anime and even attending My Little Pony cons. Throughout the interview he does a lot of spontaneous voices and it’s a lot of fun to listen to. If you’ve listened to some of the recent voice actor interviews and have been a little let down, this one is a real pick me up. I’d love to hear them interview Trevor again in the future.
Episode 187 features an interview with voice actor Cam Clarke. Cam talks a little about voicing Leonardo in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, how his dream job was being Snoopy in a Charlie Brown musical, doing voice work for the He-man reboot, voicing Patrick Stewart, getting letters from Star Wars fans for his small role in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and coming from a family of talented entertainers. It’s an interesting interview but Cam keeps it kind of mellow and doesn’t do too much in the way of voices and doesn’t have too many really interesting stories about voice acting. Plus the audio gets a little wonky every now and then. Unless you’re dead set on listening to all the interviews, I’d recommend skipping this one and hitting episode 188 instead.
Coffee With Kenobi: Episode 32 starts off with some standalone movie news and Celebration news, then the hosts talk with their wives and a very interesting discussion evolves. It’s a fun episode with them talking about what they know about Star Wars, what it’s like being married to a Star Wars fan, and they even have a Star Wars quiz. Afterwards there’s some listener feedback, but all in all, it’s a good show.
Full of Sith: Episode CII is a listener feedback episode featuring Mike, Bryan and Bobby as they go through some emails. This actually turned out to be a really great episode as the emails they pick bring up some excellent topics. It keeps things moving and entertaining. Definitely a good one to check out.
Geek Out Loud: Episode 120 starts out with Steve’s Megatron gift, a shoutout to Dorksidetoys, some listener feedback and comic talk, a Jurassic Park theory, and toy talk. Steve talks about the Padme didn’t die of a broken heart article, some more Jurassic Park thoughts, then heads into the Fantastic Four movie trailer. Like Steve, I was a little disappointed with the trailer, too. I think Steve summed it up well: it’s just not fun. Capping things off, there’s the real audio of Andy Serkis voicing the TFA trailer. Fun and entertaining show as always.
Episode 121 kicks things up a notch by adding some guests. First up, Steve talks with Erich Schoeneweiss as they compare The Last Crusade to Raiders of the Lost Ark, going over their favorite Indy moments. Then Scott Ryfun comes on for a quick Indy retort and then some comic discussion. Toss in Teresa Delgado and Jimmy Mac, and this episode goes long…real long. In fact it’s almost three hours long, but it is three hours of goodness, so plan ahead and make sure your batteries are fully charged.
RebelForce Radio: Episode 2.20.15 kicks off with a brief mention of Toy Fair and the disappointing lack of new figures from Hasbro as well as the news that there will be no mail away pre-film figures for The Force Awakens and no Celebration exclusive. On the plus side, they have guest Henry Gilroy (head writer for Star Wars Rebels) who talks about getting started with Star Wars via Dark Horse Comics, working on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Dave Filoni bringing him on for Rebels, approaching the stories, working with the team, shifting between shows, bridging the gap between eras, and his plans to head to Anaheim for Celebration. Henry gave some nice insight into the shows. Afterwards Jason and Jimmy talk about Mark Hamill being on the Schmoes Know podcast, from which they play some highlights. They also play some clips from George’s Q&A at the Sundance film festival where he talks about licensing, circus movies and encouraging people to think outside the box. Then guest Mike Klimo joins them to talk about Star Wars ring theory. He covers ring composition storytelling and highlights the parallels and connections between the films in the trilogies. It’s an interesting discussion. Overall great episode with some really nice guests.
Episode 2.13.2015 includes a lot of audio clips from people like J.J. Abrams, John Boyega, Mark Hamill and Gary Whitta all talking about working on Star Wars which leads to some good discussion. Throw in some more Liam Neeson imitations, and this episode is a lot of fun.
Rebels Declassified: “Call to Action” features Jimmy and Jason and special guests Scott Allen (501st Legion) and Stephen Stanton (Tarkin). Scott and Stephen talk a little bit before getting into the episode, touching base with Tarkin, cosplaying as Vader, and a little about Star Wars: Battle Pod. Then they dive into the episode, dissect Tarkin’s motivations, and even propose the theory that Tarkin might be a little Force sensitive. Great episode review and I really enjoyed getting to hear Stephen’s insight into the character.
“Vision of Hope“ features Jason, Jimmy and Paul as they cover the episode from Star Wars Rebels. They get a little off topic at first as they go deep into the idea of Force visions, but then they come back to cover Trayvis, the rebels, Fulcrum and Kallus. Good review overall.
Skywalking Through Neverland: Episode 66 has a pretty cool theme for their Valentine’s Day episode. They compare The Empire Strikes Back with Gone with the Wind, and the similarities go alot further than just the movie posters. They’re joined by guest Bryan Young who sheds even more insight into the similarities between the films as they cover not just familiar themes but in some cases almost exact dialog. It’s a very cool discussion. Later they have guest Donald Wicks on as they talk about preparing for Star Wars Celebration Anaheim.
