Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.

After Buzz:Path of the Jedi” episode features special guest James Arnold Taylor, the voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Hosted by Dillon Chance and Katie Cullen, it’s an interesting review of the episode, but mostly I just enjoyed hearing James’ comments. One really nice treat was when James mentioned that there was originally a pitch done for Star Wars Rebels to sell the show. For that pitch, James did the voice of Kanan, Dee Bradley Baker did the voice of Zeb, and Catherine Taber did the voice of Hera and Sabine. Toward the end of the show, they went into a news and rumors section which I tuned out on as I’m still trying to avoid The Force Awakens spoilers, but there’s plenty of warning so no need to worry about accidentally getting spoiled.

Bombad Radio: Episode 183 kicks off with a tough questions – which five expanded universe novels would you make canon? After that, Jeremiah and Jason interview author Walter Jon Williams who talks about his start in historical fiction, his extensive travelling, doing Star Wars, the research involved, what events had to be in the book, rejected ideas that would have explained why Jedi couldn’t marry, coming up with the Sword of the Jedi idea, as well as working on movies and video games and differences between the mediums. It’s a nice interview that helps shine a light on part of the EU and gives fans a better idea about Destiny’s Way and the author behind it.

Fangirls Going Rogue: Episode #15 reveals their newest member, Sarah Woloski, thus creating the fangirl trifecta of awesomeness. Seriously, these are my three favorite female podcasters and now they’re all in one show. A listener could not ask for more (…well maybe one more, Amy Ratcliffe). In this episode they talk about the runDisney Star Wars Half-Marathon, the Rebel, Jedi, Princess, Queen: Star Wars and the Power of Costume Smithsonian touring exhibit, Tricia mentions and interview she did with Star Wars writer Tish Pahl, they talk about Sabine sketchbook artist Annie Stoll, and they have a character discussion focusing on Luke Skywalker. Lots of fun and plenty of great topics. Continue Reading Podcasts in Review…

Movie Review: ‘American Sniper’

January 22, 2015 at 12:00 am | Posted in Movies, Reviews | 2 Comments

american-sniper-posterAmerican Sniper, quite simply, is Clint Eastwood’s masterpiece. This is the best film he has ever directed. This is Bradley Cooper’s best performance. And this is one of the best war films I have ever seen. If you have any inkling to see this movie, do it.

As the trailers have hinted, this movie does more than just show the war, it portrays the life of a soldier. By diving into the main character, it shows a carefree guy going from the life of a cowboy to that of a Navy SEAL in Iraq. The pacing is perfect. Parts of the movie build the character, showcase his life at home and his family. We see him fall in love, get married, and have kids. Yet along the way, his life is interrupted by his other life, that of a soldier at war. There are scenes of combat, firefights, and brutality. As the movie continues, the war takes it’s toll and changes him. Consequently, his life changes to the point that his connection to his family becomes tenuous, and his reality becomes focused on fighting alongside his fellow soldiers. The significance of the separation plays a large part in the story as he grows away from kids and his wife, then struggles to return. Continue Reading Movie Review: ‘American Sniper’…

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #127 is a Hellboy story without Hellboy. That said, it still has the same artistic richness and mysterious story elements that make the franchise intriguing. In this issue, one of the agents returns from near death experience and finds a revelation for himself, one that might be the key to their success against a mystical monster. Book Review: ‘The Deep’ by Nick Cutter

January 20, 2015 at 12:01 am | Posted in Books, Reviews | Leave a comment

Nick Cutter is an author who captured my attention with his last book, The Troop. It was an impressive horror novel. On that basis, I was happy to hear he was diving into another book and I was eager to dive into it. The Deep has a great premise and starts out with an engrossing story and characters. It gets creepy and it gets good. But unfortunately, this is a train that goes off the tracks. Click here to read our full review.

Bombad Radio: Episode 182 starts out with Jeremiah and Zach talking about tv shows and Nobility. Then they break to their interview with Adrienne Wilkinson who talks about Xena: Warrior Princess, The Force Unleashed, voice work, acting, and Sam Witwer’s impressive knowledge of Star Wars. It’s a nice interview with some good behind-the-scenes looks at various shows and Star Wars projects.

Coffee With Kenobi: Show #29 is a look back at 2014 with special guest Rob Wainfur (The Bearded Trio). Together they recap their year in Star Wars, their guests, interviews and major events of the year. If you’ve missed any episodes, this is a great way to find out what you need to go back and listen to.

Full of Sith: Episode XCVIII Bobby, Bryan and Amy share what they’ve been up to, before Bobby moves things along to a variety of topics, keeping the pace moving, and the discussion flowing. They touch on Gary Whitta leaving the Star Wars standalone movie, their thoughts on Star Wars Rebels “Path of the Jedi”, the fates of Kanan and Ezra, who Fulcrum might be (Leia or Ahsoka?), whether Kanan is really a Jedi cowboy, whether Hera has been pushed to the side, the impact of Yoda, new The Force Awakens casting leaks, the actors from The Raid, and movie posters. Great episode covering a lot of ground. A nice burst of Star Wars. Continue Reading Podcasts in Review…
