Star Wars Books: A New Dawn in September

Uploaded today on Star Wars Books’ Facebook page, Del Rey hits fans with a cryptic message: a new dawn begins September 2014. What does it mean? Well, we have clues perfect for speculation. For starters, Disney-Lucasfilm Press is starting the Star Wars Saga Program which will start launching books in October retelling the stories of the original films thus introducing children to an era of the saga they might not be familiar with. It’s all about prepping kids for Star Wars Episode VII and seeing Han, Luke and Leia on the big screen.

Secondly, there are the two untitled Star Wars hardcover books set for a Fall release that are currently showing up on Random House’s catalog (Untitled Star Wars #1 and Untitled Star Wars #2). The first one is currently set for a September 2, 2014 release which would coincide with their new dawn in September 2014. The second book is set for November 4, 2014.

IF these two catalog entries are new adult Star Wars novels, and IF the “New Dawn” is an indicator that we’re getting new adult Star Wars novels starting in September, then the question I ask is: who are the authors? Sure, we could speculate on the content. They could be Star Wars Episode VII tie-in novels, they could be more books set in the OT era, or they could be the start of a massive reboot for the Star Wars Expanded Universe. But I’m a Star Wars reader. I like good stories. If the story is good, it doesn’t really matter what it’s about. However, authors matter. A good author is a good indicator of a good story.

Thus far, we haven’t gotten any official updates on Christie Golden’s Sword of the Jedi series, or Paul S. Kemp’s mysterious duology. Timothy Zahn, Aaron Allston and Michael Stackpole teased the possibility of an epic three part story at Dragon*Con but with Aaron’s passing, that probably won’t be a Star Wars project now. John Jackson Miller and Drew Karpyhsyn both seem pretty busy with their non-Star Wars books, so that drops down their probability. And of course, they could always use new authors like with the Empire and Rebellion series. Regardless of what they do, I think it’s safe to say this new dawn means more adult Star Wars novels will be coming in September, which is good news because the only other novel we know about is Kevin Hearne’s Luke Skywalker novel and that’s not slated until January 2015.
