Get ready for something completely different. Rebel Heist #1 is not your typical Star Wars comic. The story won’t go the way you expect it. Heck, even the art is a little different. But sometime different can be good. Click here to read our full review.

The Cast

The initial cast for Star Wars Episode VII has been revealed. We all knew Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher would be returning to play Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia (because George Lucas spilled the beans on that last year) but the the icing on the cake is knowing Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) and Kenny Baker (R2-D2) are all returning for their iconic roles. All that said, there is great deal of interest in the new-to-Star Wars cast members: John Boyega, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, Daisy Ridley, Andy Serkis and Max von Sydow. So who are these people?

Well John Boyega is a relatively unknown actor, Daisy Ridley even more so. Adam Driver is somewhat known for his role as Adam Sackler in HBO’s tv show Girls. Oscar Isaac has done a few films, and I recognize him best as Prince John in the Russell Crowe Robin Hood movie. Domhnall Gleeson has done a lot of small roles including Bill Weasley, Ron Weasley’s eldest brother in the Harry Potter films. Then there’s Andy Serkis who everyone will know as Gollum from Lord of the Rings.

Last, but not least, is Max von Sydow who has done more films than all the rest combined. He’s played Jesus in The Greatest Story Ever Told, Father Merrin in The Exorcist, Emperor Ming in Flash Gordon, King Osric in Conan the Barbarian, Ernst Stavro Blofeld in Never Say Never Again, Doctor Kynes in Dune, Sigmund Freud in The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, and Chief Justice Fargo in Judge Dredd. Not too mention roles in Minority Report, Rush Hour 3, Shutter Island, The Seventh Seal, and also a role in the aforementioned Robin Hood. Plus Skyrim gamers may recognize him as the voice of Esbern, the chronicler of the Blades.

There will certainly be a lot more news in the weeks and months to come, but for now, movie fans have some tantalizing speculation to play with.

With the announcement of the new Star Wars canon, there also came the news that all old Star Wars novels would stay in print under the Star Wars Legends banner. Now all Star Wars readers can celebrate as the best Star Wars book ever returns to print under the well deserved Legends banner.

The Glove of Darth Vader…it was certainly legendary.

legends-bannerWe all knew it was coming, and at least now Star Wars readers will have time to prepare ourselves for the change. As Scott Shannon, Del Rey’s Senior Vice President and Publisher, commented “And now we’re excited to finally be able to call our upcoming novels true canon—a single, cohesive Star Wars storyline—all while keeping the amazing backlist of Star Wars Legends content in print.” So while we’ve got a new canon starting in September, the old canon is being rebranded Star Wars Legends. The rebranding includes new “Legends” banners on the Star Wars book covers no longer a part of the official canon. That means any books released prior to John Jackson Miller’s upcoming novel A New Dawn.

Now I’m not a hardcore book collector, but I do have a large Star Wars book collection. Initially I tried to get them all as cheaply as possible which meant lots of paperbacks. In years since, I’ve tried to replace them with hardcovers whenever possible. That means I have a few copies of the same book just in different formats. I’ve also picked up extra copies when the price is too good to pass by. As such, I’ve come across different sized hardcover novels. And of course there are Star Wars books out there with different covers, especially the foreign editions which sometimes have completely different artwork. With the new Star Wars Legends line, this means we’ll be getting ALL of those old Star Wars novels with new covers. The question is: how hardcore of a collector are you? Will you try to get them all? Or, like me, will you instead pick a few discreet titles to add to your collection. One way or another, here’s a look at some of the “Legends” covers that have already been revealed. Force Lightning, Mofos!

star-wars-lords-of-the-sith-paul-s-kempAuthor Paul S. Kemp also shared a little on his blog today about his newly revealed Star Wars novel Lords of the Sith.

My next Star Wars novel was announced today (press release here).  This is the cover.  Just.  Look.  At.  It.

Now, I actually wanted to title the novel, “Force Lightning, Mofos!” but that idea was not well received.  :-)

A blurb from Del Rey:

When the Emperor and his notorious apprentice, Darth Vader, find themselves stranded in the middle of insurgent action on an inhospitable planet, they must rely solely on each other, the Force, and their awesome martial skills to prevail. Created in collaboration with the Lucasfilm Story Group. Coming March 2015. Jacket art by Aaron McBride.

I can say a few things more about the book:  First, as is apparent from thatspectacular cover, the book features Vader and Palpatine.  It also features a character who I’m not allowed to name just yet, but who appeared in The Clone Wars animated series.  In terms of where it fits in the timeline, Lords of the Sith is set after the Revenge of the Sith film and before the forthcoming Rebels television show.

Alas, that’s all I’m allowed to say at this point about the substance of the book.

I’m excited about it, though, and hope you are, too.

Oh, and finally:  BOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMM!

A New Dawn Rises

star-wars-a-new-dawn-by-john-jackson-millerAuthor John Jackson Miller shared some info on his newly announced Star Wars Rebels book A New Dawn over on his blog as well as his trip to Lucasfilm to film a EU appreciation video along with Timothy Zahn.

The news is out! I can at last share the project I’ve been working on this fall and winter: STAR WARS: A NEW DAWN is my new hardcover adult novel release, set for release this September from Random House/Del Rey!

The novel (my first Star Wars work since Kenobi) is set several years after Star Wars: Episode III — and several years before the upcoming animated television series Star Wars: Rebels. As you can see from the cover, two of the main characters of that series, Kanan and Hera, have major roles in the book. This is the first novel integrating input from the Lucasfilm Story Group, which manages story concepts across all media, and so in addition to working with Random House’s team I both got inspiration and feedback from the series’ executive producers, Dave Filoni, Simon Kinberg, and Greg Weisman, as well as Pablo Hidalgo, Jennifer Heddle, and Leland Chee.
