Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review. I did some catching up, so there are quite a few this week.
Bombad Radio: Episode 129 has an interview with Star Wars: The Old Republic writer Charles Boyd who talks about what the game designers are working on next giving gamers an idea of what to expect in the way of new content, and what isn’t likely. He also mentions the kind of studies they’ve done to studying player’s behaviors, which was pretty interesting. Very informative episode.
Episode 130 is a Star Wars free-for-all as multiple guests all weigh in on a variety of Star Wars topics. They talk about Mark Hamill and Liam Neeson being in The Clone Wars Season 6, Episode VII news and rumors, and lots more.
Coffee with Kenobi: Rebels Reactions #3 features guest Craig Dickinson as he and the hosts discuss Star Wars Rebels. As can be expected, there’s some insightful commentary on the characters and themes of the show as they cover Kanan, Ezra and Zeb (note this was prior to the reveals of Hera and Sabine). I rather liked the observation regarding the biblical sounding names and it’ll be interesting if the show goes any further into that theme. Nice discussion and worth a listen. Looking forward to hearing them discuss the new female characters as I’m very intrigued by Sabine.
Fangirls Going Rogue: Episode #5 starts out with guest Lisa Granshaw (The Daily Dot) and a Star Wars Rebels discussion which also touches on the controversial male orientation of Disney and Hasbro’s marketing for the show. Afterwards special guest Clare Grant joins them to talk Team Unicorn and lots of other fun Star Wars and geeky topics. Great show, so make sure this one hits your playlist.
Full of Sith: Episode LIV has a very nice interview with authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (aka James S.A. Corey) covering their new book, Honor Among Thieves. They talk about how the project got started, some of the goals and guidelines for the story, how they met each other, and their thoughts on Star Wars Episode VII. Very fun interview. Afters the show gets into some listener feedback on Vader.
Jedi Journals: March Episode covers all the usual book and comic info as well as a very nice interview with authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck covering Honor Among Thieves. Definitely worth a listen of the interview. They touch on some good stuff and at length.
RebelForce Radio: Episode 2.21.2014 has news, Star Wars Rebels character coverage, and the one and only Daniel Logan who they ask about the Fett rumors and talk about his Star Trek gig. Jimmy talks about the Star Wars content in the new Lego Movie, and the show wraps up with some stirring discussion on Mandalorians and Jango Fett. Kind of a sour note to end it on in my opinion, as I for one don’t find myself in agreement with the hosts when it comes to the hardline TCW stance of the Mandalorian content (ie. Jango not being a Mandalorian based on a politician’s offhanded comment).
Episode 2.28.2014 features special guests Topher Grace (That 70’s Show) and Kyle Newman as they talk all things Star Wars. Topher certainly has some fun things to say, and they touch on his fan cut of the Prequel Trilogy. Lots of other topics on this show, including some more re-opening of the wounds with the Mando discussion brought up in the previous episode. Still, the negative is definitely outweighed by the positive.
Rebels Report: Episode 6 and Episode 7 continues their excellent coverage of Star Wars Rebels with character focuses on Ezra and Zeb. Great shows packed with information and humor. If you’re looking for Star Wars Rebels coverage, this is the podcast to turn to. Pete and Andy are really hitting a great groove with these shows.
Rock Out Loud: Episode 1…nope, this ain’t Star Wars, but when Steve Glosson launches a new podcast, it’s always worth a listen. In this new podcast, Steve is joined by Kristin as they discuss the wonderful world of music. What bands do they love? Why Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen and Def Leppard. They delve into some of their favorites songs, and I have to give huge props to Steve for pointing out AC/DC “Shoot to Thrill. It made me shout “F*ck Yeah!”. Ahem. I’m a huge AC/DC fan :) If you like rock ‘n’ roll type music, check this one out. I know Kristin’s Def Leppard picks had me thinking of my favorite Leppard songs.
Star Wars Action News: Episode 417 wraps up SWAN’s coverage of New York Toy Fair with a rundown on the Star Wars LEGO toys as well as Star Wars products from Uncle Milton, Kotobukiya, and Underground Toys. For those who collect more than Hasbro, this is a good episode to check out.
Episode 418 is a Disney themed episode with coverage of the Star Wars Weekends announcements and new Disney collectibles. They also point out that Hasbro collectors might want to check Disney stores for Black Series figures. Plus there’s a review of James S.A. Corey’s latest novel, Honor Among Thieves.
Episode 419 focuses almost exclusively on Joe Schreiber’s book Maul: Lockdown with a great interview with the author. Joe talks about getting the project, writing a prison genre story, and how different versions of the story had different character reveals for Radique. Very awesome insight on the book and definitely worth a listen.
Star Wars Bookworms: Episode 20 features guests Pete Morrison and Andy Ury (Rebels Report) as they join the hosts for a fun and entertaining discussion of Star Wars Rebels. They go over each character with lots of insight and plenty of enjoyable moments. Be sure to check it out. Right now Pete and Andy are on top of the game when it comes to Star Wars Rebels coverage, so you couldn’t ask for two better guests for the topic.
Episode 21 dives back into the comics of the EU with conversations on both Darth Vader and the Ninth Assassin and Legacy Volume 2: Prisoner of the Floating World. Mark Newbold (Jedi News) joins them on this episode for lots of fun and thorough discussion. They also grill Mark with their standard barrage of Star Wars questions–favorite movie, character, etc–which is always neat to hear. Good episode all around with a short bonus interview with Aaron Allston back from Fan Days.
Star Wars Report: Episode 123 offers a farewell to author Aaron Allston (stay tuned to the end of the show for a quick but nice interview with Aaron), an analysis of The Clone Wars Season 6 trailer, and some thoughts on the show hitting Netflix. Guest Aaron Goins and Michael Cohen join Riley and Bethany. While there was a lot of nice discussion, I have to take umbrage with Michael Cohen’s view of the Knights of the Old Republic video game. It’s the first time I’m ever heard any belittle the story value of KOTOR. Most people who have played that game hold it in high regard. I certainly thought the story was great. All well, to each their own. Of course, I didn’t really care for the story for The Force Unleashed. It’s interesting how the fan community differs with what parts they really enjoy.
