Star Wars Books has posted micro excerpt #5 for Maul: Lockdown by Joe Schreiber.
“What’s his name?” she asked. “The new inmate?”
“Prisoner 11240?” ThreeDee answered back. “I’ve already taken the liberty of uploading all relevant data onto your tablet.”
Sadiki punched the numbers into the console in front of her, watching her new champion’s file scroll across the screen. It read:
Inmate 11240
Date of Entry: 01102211224
Name: Jagannath
Species: Zabrak
Gender: Male
Height: 1.75 meters
Mass: 80 kg
Eyes: Yellow
Skin: Red
Prior Occupation: Mercenary
Charged With: Murder“That’s it?” Sadiki stabbed the cursor down, but the screen was blank. “Where’s the rest of it?”
“There is no more.”
“Where did he come from? Can somebody at least tell me that?”
“He was apprehended on a routine sweep of the mining colonies on Subterrel, where local authorities identified him from an outstanding murder charge. Initial lab cultures and blood work are still pending.”
The droid clicked and whirred toward her, photoreceptors brightening. “So far he has eluded any more detailed classification. Would you like me to order a full psychiatric workup?”
Sadiki considered before shaking her head. “No. Not yet. For now let’s see how long he lasts. He wouldn’t be the first big noise to come through here and pull a quick fade.”
Maul: Lockdown will be out on January 28, 2014 in hardcover, digital and audiobook formats. Fans can also check out the prequel short story “The Syrox Redemption” in Star Wars Insider #146 which is illustrated by John Van Fleet.

Here is this week’s Around the Web.
Book News
- For horror fans, you might be familiar with the Australian horror flick Wolf Creek. Not only is the movie getting a sequel in February, but a book series as well. Penguin Books will be releasing Wolf Creek: Origin February 1st, a prequel to the original film. The book will be by authors Greg Mclean and Aaron Sterns who are also the writers of the films. Alongside that will be Wolf Creek: Desolation Game by Greg Mclean and Brett McBean. Like Origin, it’s a prequel novel. Both are being published over in Australia so I’m not sure when they’ll be available elsewhere, however Amazon does have a US eBook listing for Origin and Desolation Game with a January 2nd release.
- Jason Fry did a nice Q&A for a young fan. In his letter, he included a mention for three new Star Wars books he’s got coming out and one that’s on hold.
- Martha Wells has a nice year end wrap-up post for fans wanting to make sure they didn’t miss out on anything.
- Paul S. Kemp talked a little about The Godborn and Egil & Nix over on Fantasy Book Critic.
- Plus an update on The Sentinel by Troy Denning, “Just finished proofreading the galleys for my Sundering novel, THE SENTINEL (due out in April). Boy, it’s fun to be in the Realms again!”
- Kevin J. Anderson is also holding a bad joke contest for his Dan Shamble, Zombie PI character McGoo on Facebook.
