Newsarama has a new interview with The Star Wars artist Mike Mayhew. The Star Wars #1 hits stores tomorrow, so be sure to check it out.

You’ve called this the Apocalypse Now version of Star Wars in terms of its dark nature. How is it so different, thematically?

Mike Mayhew: Thematically, it’s probably similar; a group of disparate characters come together to fight for freedom against an evil empire. The execution is way different and darker. There is much more emotion, action, and violence. It’s on par with The Searchers or Seven Samurai. Almost all of The Star Wars #3 feels like a “spaghetti western” with lazerswords. This isn’t a children’s fantasy that softens danger and is mindful of toy licenses. This is a journey into the heart of darkness, with Jedi warriors who slice and dice their way through everything the Empire can throw at them. I’m wrapping up The Star Wars #4, and half way through this “movie” General Luke is approaching double digits for kills. Overall there is more loss, tragedy, and passion in these characters driven by higher stakes consequences as a result of the war with the Empire. This is the draft that I bet John Milius would have loved!

A Sad Message From Ann Crispin

September 3, 2013 at 12:17 pm | Posted in Books, News, scifi/fantasy | 2 Comments

Ann CrispinAs some of you may be aware, Ann Crispin, author of the popular Han Solo Trilogy, has been fighting the good fight against cancer.  Unfortunately, it looks like Ann won’t be winning this fight.  It is with much sadness that we share the message Ann has posted facebook.

I’ve been hesitant to make this post, but it’s time. I want to thank you all for your good wishes and prayers. I fear my condition is deteriorating. I am doing the best I can to be positive but I probably don’t have an awful lot of time left. I want you all to know that I am receiving excellent care and am surrounded by family and friends.

I wish all aspiring writers the will to finish and a good contract. Please continue to monitor Writer Beware and be careful who you sign with. Victoria Strauss and Richard White are there to help.

I’ve asked Michael to collect and read me your messages. As I don’t know how things will proceed, I don’t know if I’ll have the strength to post on Facebook again.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Ann and her family.  You can leave messages for Ann and her family on her public Facebook page.

Club Jade Interview with Michael Price

Club Jade has a nice interview with Michael Price, the writer for The Yoda Chronicles.

The first episode of LEGO Star Wars: The Yoda Chronicles: “The Phantom Clone” introduced us to the Sith clone, JEK-14. What’s he up to in “Menace of the Sith”?

Michael Price: He’s searching for his identity. This episode picks up fairly soon after the ending of “The Phantom Clone”. If you recall, Sidious and Dooku’s plan was to create a huge army of Sith Clones, but, thanks to Yoda, Mace and the Padawans, JEK-14 was the sole surviving member of that “army.” As we begin “Menace Of The Sith”, Dooku and Sidious are trying to move ahead with their plot to create hundreds of powerful Sith Clones like JEK, but since their Clone Factory on Kamino has been destroyed they’re kind of improvising on the go. They’ve come up with a “Plan B”, of which JEK-14 is the centerpiece, but JEK isn’t so sure he wants to go along with it. At the start of the show, JEK is very much the unthinking tool of Dooku and Sidious we saw in “The Phantom Clone” — ready to do whatever his Masters tell him. But soon he starts to question his purpose in life and whether or not he wants to do the bidding of these two embodiments of evil. After all, he’s also part Jedi, having been created with the use of the Kaiburr Crystal. So he’s torn about just what to do… and that plays out in the episode.
