Monday Funny: Willie and Joe

Willie & Joe was the creation of Pultizer Prize winning cartoonist Bill Mauldin. His cartoons, often critical of the spit and polish attitude of some officers, made Maudlin a hero to the common soldier in WWII. General Patton once threatened to throw Mauldin in jail, but none other than Supreme Commander ET General Eisenhower ordered Patton to leave Mauldin alone. Eisenhower understood that the Willie & Joe cartoons were an outlet for the frustrations the common soldier experienced in WWII. Bill Mauldin further cemented his regard with the soldiers when he was wounded at Monte Cassino. He was later awarded the Army’s Legion of Merit for his WWII body of work.
For the Greatest Generation, Bill Mauldin would always be the man who spoke for them. He died on January 22, 2003.
