Jerry Vanderstelt is an artist who has a tremendous talent for capturing characters who look as real in a painting as they do on the movie screen. From Star Wars to The Hobbit, he’s worked on some great film franchises and with plenty more to come. We decided to take a moment to ask Jerry some questions about his work and what’s coming next. Can you describe the process you go through to create one of your paintings?

Jerry Vanderstelt: Each piece has a different process, depending on the needs of the imagery I am shooting for, but typically I begin with a sketch, then once that is established and approved ( either by me or someone like Lucasfilm ), then I move on to the actual art. Tom Taylor’s ‘The Deep’ Heads to Television

Tom Taylor’s comic series The Deep has been optioned to Technicolor. Plans are for 26 half hour episodes which will be CG animated and targeted for children 8-12 and for families. Tom Taylor has the full press release on his site.

If you haven’t read The Deep yet, you can get them from Gestalt Comics. They’re well crafted family friendly stories with bright, exuberant artwork and worth checking out.

Star Wars is such a vivid story with some truly mesmerizing visuals. Many artists have attempted to capture the beauty of the galaxy far, far away, but few have done so well as Jerry Vanderstelt.

You may have seen Jerry’s work on Star Wars Topps cards, on the cover of the Star Wars Art: Illustration book, or at Star Wars Celebration. His booth at Star Wars Celebration VI certainly garnered a lot of attention as people marveled at the prints.
