Who Has the Right?
November 5, 2012 at 10:18 am | Posted in Disney, Episode VII, Star Wars News | Leave a commentDisney may have bought LucasFilm Ltd. for $4 billion but there are still some rights issues to contend with. According to TheWrap, “Fox maintains theatrical and home-video distribution rights to those films through May, 2020.” Those films being all six Star Wars films. On top of that, 20th Century Fox wholly owns the rights to A New Hope. Furthermore, Paramount has the distribution option for sequels to the Indiana Jones franchise.
The two things Disney seems to have gotten out of the deal without entanglements is the new films and merchandising, two aspects that were stressed in their conference call. So it seems Disney’s focus for the near future will be in producing the new trilogy and a heavy marketing campaign for Star Wars merchandise. If they want to come out ahead, a lot will depend on the success of Episodes VII, VIII, and IX.
“…it has to do something that George Lucas himself was unable to do. Namely, recapture the magic of the initial three films in the series and avoid the pitfalls that led many critics and fanboys to revile his later prequels. In other words, a repeat of Jar Jar Binks could be costly.”
