In a Hollywood Reporter story a spokesperson for LucasFilm reports that George Lucas plans to put almost the entire profit from his Disney deal into a foundation focused on educational issues.

“George Lucas has expressed his intention, in the event the deal closes, to donate the majority of the proceeds to his philanthropic endeavors.”

No word yet on which foundation will receive the funds although Lucas has already funded his own Eutopia which he’s the chairman of.

The spokesperson added that this continues the commitment Lucas made in 2010.

“I am dedicating the majority of my wealth to improving education.  It is the key to the survival of the human race.  We have to plan for our collective future—and the first step begins with social, emotional, and intellectual tools we provide to our children.  As humans, our greatest tool for survival is our ability to think and to adapt—as educators, storytellers, and communicators our responsibility is to continue to do so.” ~ George Lucas

More Thoughts on the Big News

Star Wars author Pablo Hidalgo posted on the official Star Wars Blog about the announcement of three new Star Wars movies and the acquisition of Lucasfilm by Disney. You can check it out here. Steve Sansweet weighed in with his thoughts here. And you can also check out J.W. Rinzler’s post here.

Star Wars author Timothy Zahn also shared some initial thoughts on Facebook.

1. No, I haven’t been contacted by either Disney or LFL.
2. There’s no indication that anything from the Thrawn Trilogy (or any other EU book/comic will be part of the new movies.
3. There’s also no indication that they *won’t* make an appearance. Right now, we really have nothing on any of those details.
4. If Disney *did* want to use anything from the EU, they wouldn’t need the author’s approval or permission to do so. Everything that’s been written under the Star Wars logo is LFL properly (as is only right and proper), and they can do with it as they please.
5. If by some miracle Disney *does* want my input on the project, I *will* be on the next flight to California. Heck, I’ll charter a plane if I have to.

Star Wars author Jason Fry kindly posted some feedback on his blog about the BIG NEWS. Episode VII, Disney buying LucasFilm, Jason takes the time to answer some fan questions.

1. No, I had no idea. I’m a freelance writer is all — they don’t tell me these things. I will say I’m very impressed with the ability of some folks I know to keep gigantic secrets.

2. I sensed something big was up — call it a very interesting vibe that’s been in the air. But I thought it had to do with the arrival of Kathleen Kennedy and sorting out things for the future. Which wasn’t wrong, but I’m as amazed as anybody else by the scope of the revelation. Continue Reading Thoughts on the Big News by Jason Fry…

Disney to buy Lucasfilm in proposed $4 billion deal

October 30, 2012 at 3:19 pm | Posted in Disney, Episode VII, Movies, Star Wars News | Leave a comment

Forbes is reporting that Walt Disney announced a deal to buy George Lucas’ Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion in stock and cash.

Lucas said in a statement that it is “now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers.”

“I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime,” Lucas said. “I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.”

The announcement said she will serve as executive producer on new films in the franchise, with Lucas as creative consultant. The announcement notes that Star Wars Episode 7 is scheduled for release in 2015, with more films expected to follow.
