Mayan Doomsday Update: You’re going to have to pay your taxes after all.  In the last known, still mostly unexplored Mayan megacity, researchers have discovered unique wall murals and a calendar that predicts the world not being destroyed, but instead continuing.

“In addition to a still vibrant scene of a king and his retinue, the walls are rife with calculations that helped ancient scribes track vast amounts of time. Contrary to the idea the Maya predicted the end of the world in 2012, the markings suggest dates thousands of years in the future.”

The image at the right is a wall mural of Mayan warriors.  It and it’s companion murals are unprecedented, having never been found anywhere else.

You can watch a video on this discovery on the National Geographic website. Continue Reading Big Bang Science…

Star Wars: Detours will be bringing us more Jar Jar. Just remember with the upcoming election, a vote for Jar Jar is a vote for galactic collapse.

Soon we’ll be seeing some new authors in the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and one of them will be Kevin Hearne. Now I’ve never heard of Kevin before, but I figured I’d try one of his books out to see what his writing is like. I dove into Hounded and well, I struggled to come up for breath. This book was so entertaining, I just couldn’t put it down. Combine the best elements of Aaron Allston and Paul S. Kemp, and you get an idea of what Kevin Hearne is like. A combination of great humor and great characters, Hounded is definitely a book worth reading. Click here to check out our full review.

‘Children of Fire’ Update

Author Drew Karpyshyn posted a new update on his website including details on his upcoming original fantasy novel Children of Fire. The first pass on the manuscript has been completed and it’s now in the hands of his editor, so we’re definitely seeing some progress. Both Children of Fire and The Scorched Earth (the second book in the trilogy) are planned for 2014 release. According to Drew, Children of Fire is the longest novel he’s ever written clocking in around 150,000 words (Darth Bane: Path of Destruction was around 110,000 words).

“That’s not to say things are slow, though – as I’ve mentioned before, I hate “filler” in my books. I don’t like to write scenes where characters sit around a campfire and share poems with each other; even at that length every chapter keeps the plot moving forward.” –Drew Karpyshyn

Wired Interview with Matt Lanter

Wired interviewed The Clone Wars voice actor Matt Lanter and posted five quick questions covering the affect of Star Wars on newer generations and his views on the films.

What’s your favorite Star Wars movie and why?

ML: Oh, man. A lot of people might gawk at it, but I really love Revenge of the Sith because of what happens to Anakin. I think I watched the prequels before I watched the originals, so maybe that was more of my childhood than the originals were. And it’s really an emotional movie: huge events happening; the turn and fall of all that is good. I dig that one. But I also love Jedi, and I love Empire. So … (laughing) half of them are my favorites.
