Lucky us.  A couple of planetary scientists in St. Louis have proven, with computer simulations, that planets can actually be vaporized.  That gleeful noise you hear is Grand Moff Tarkin cackling.  Discovery News has the full story here.

When you’re the most populated country on this planet I’m not sure building the world’s largest battery is a wise use of space, but the Chinese have done just that.  It’s a 36-megawatt-hour monster and the Chinese didn’t end it with that.  It’s hooked into 140 megawatts of wind and solar power.  Still, I guess there’s one benefit of a battery this size; it’s going to be pretty hard to misplace it.  PopSci has a full report on the project.

NASA has a great little mission going called WISE, and if you don’t know about it, you should. WISE – Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer has discovered some pretty interesting things and the latest is a doozy.  It’s uncovered a motherlode of supermassive black holes and extreme galaxies called hot Dogs.  Hot Dogs (aka: extreme galaxies) are called that because they’re obscured by dust that burns brightly in infrared light.  You can read more about these hot Dogs, black holes and other stellar finds on the NASA site.

From personal DNA sequencing for the low price of $100 to insect-size robot spies, Matador Life gives you the low-down on 23 new technologies you’ll see by 2021.  Just in case you’re inclined to be skeptical about their predictions, they do make a good point:

So, what should we expect in 2021? Well, 10 years ago, what did you expect to see now? Did you expect the word “Friend” to become a verb? Did you expect your twelve-year-old brother to stay up texting until 2am? Did you expect 140-character messaging systems enabling widespread revolutions against decades-old dictatorial regimes?

So think twice when you read this prediction article.

Lastly, for something a lot more down to earth, you can find out exactly what happens to you when you exercise.  Trust me, it’s not just the endorphins.  A lot more goes into it, and LifeHacker is happy to tell what that is right here.
