Last night on Rock Center, host Brian Williams (no relation) spoke with composer John Williams. While most of Rock Center’s coverage last night was focused on the London Olympics, a John Williams piece was more than a little apropos. Williams did, after all, compose the Olympic theme we are all so familiar with (for the 1984 games in Los Angeles). At 80 years of age, John Williams is still working, his latest project being the movie, Lincoln, starring Daniel Day Lewis.
John Williams is nothing if not prolific. He’s garnered 47 Academy Award nominations and 5 Oscars. Besides his easily most recognizable music, the theme to Star Wars, Williams has collaborated with Stephen Spielberg for 40 years. Williams’ personal favorite movie/music from his collaboration with Spielberg is Schindler’s List, followed by Close Encounters and Jaws.
Visitors to Williams studio are often surprised to find there is no computer or synthesizer. Williams works with a piano and a desk. And if you’d like to hear the Maestro in person, you’ll find him during the summer at Tanglewood conducting the Boston Pops.
