Forbes posted an interview with Star Wars 1313 Creative Director Dominic Robilliard. In the interview they chat about the mature direction of the game, and why they decided to stray away from Jedi.

Star Wars has stayed clear of mature themes for decades now — why was this the right time to explore a new direction for the franchise?

Dominic Robilliard: I think that the reason this mature side of the world is so compelling is that we’ve always known it’s there, lurking in the background.  Ever since I saw the original Star Wars and that iconic scene in the Cantina, I’ve longed to see more of this mysterious criminal backdrop that characters like Han Solo and Jabba represent. Importantly though, it’s not just that it’s a cool idea for a game setting, it’s also that it’s the right environment for the player experience we’re trying to create. A lot of the motivation for our moment to moment gameplay is to create an exciting sense of threat, pressure, and tension for the player, which really means we need a more grounded hero, more visceral mechanics, and perhaps most importantly, vulnerabilities we can relate to. It’s that vulnerability and more human quality that led us to this part of the universe instead of the more god-like Jedi that LucasArts has explored in the past.

Robilliard also emphasized that Star Wars 1313 will be less dark and light and more gray as it focuses on the criminal aspect of Star Wars. Click here to read the full interview.
