Today Roqoo Depot wishes a very happy birthday to one of our favorite Star Wars authors, Michael A. Stackpole. Mike broke into the Star Wars scene with the X-Wing series and turned Corran Horn into a major character in the Expanded Universe. His Star Wars novels include Rogue Squadron, Wedge’s Gamble, The Krytos Trap,The Bacta War; I, Jedi, Isard’s Revenge, Onslaught, and Ruin. He’s also written several short stories and four Star Wars comic series.

Mike was born in Wausau, Wisconsin. His father was a Pediatrician and his mother was a teacher. Six months after he was born, they moved to Vermount. There his brother Patrick and sister Kerin were born. While Patrick went on to a career in the military and his sister became a lawyer, Mike was destined for something else. He went to the University of Vermount and got a Bachelor’s of Art degree in History. Afterwards, he moved to Arizona where he still resides. He worked as a designer for role-playing games, wrote magazine articles for the industry, and later designed computer games such as Bard’s Tale III, Wasteland, Star Trek: 25th Anniversary, and Star Trek: Judgment Rites.

In 1986, he wrote his first novel, Talion: Revenant; however the book didn’t get published until more than a decade later in 1997. His first writing job landed in 1987 when FASA Corporation hired him to write the BattleTech: Warrior Trilogy. His success in that series led him to write many more BattleTech books and some of his stories were used in the animated television show. In 1996 he wrote his first Star Wars novel X-Wing: Rogue Squadron. Since then he has written over a dozen original fiction novels and is a prolific supporter of eBooks and self-publication. Mike’s latest self-published eBook series is Homeland Security Services, which focuses on an alternate reality were terrorism has led America to adopt an extreme approach in government control of society. The next eBook in that series will be Perfectly Dead, which Mike is currently working on now.

Aside from eBooks, Mike also has a print book coming out next month, Of Limited Loyalty, that is the second novel in The Crown Colonies series. The novel will be published by Night Shade Books and will be out on December 6th. The Crown Colonies series blurs together fantasy and history during America’s colonial period. Musket armed militia men find themselves in battle against foreign armies, wild natives, and even zombies.

When not writing stories, Mike teaches and gives advice to other writers with his online newsletter The Secrets as well as giving writing classes at various conventions. Many of his posts on his website give insights into the industry and the future of publishing.
