How Big Is Big? – Time For Some Perspective

This week for science Tuesday I thought I would share an excellent series of pictures a reader emailed me that lend a little perspective to how small we really are. In the vernacular I use in this column I often refer to planet Earth as “our little blue marble” or occasionally I wax a bit less eloquent and call her “this mudball”. From a certain more cosmic point of view though, we don’t even rate that large.
I would love to give credit to whoever created these pictures. Sadly I found it difficult to google an image. I do not know where they originated but if they are your work please verify that in some reasonable way as I would be happy to credit you.
First, let’s have a look at Earth in relation to our closest celestial neighbors.
Looking good for our little blue marble, yes? By the way, I am aware that Pluto isn’t nearby and I’m not even going to get into the “is it a planet” thing but it’s there for further perspective. Now let’s see how we stack up against some of the heavy hitters in the Solar System. Continue Reading How Big Is Big? – Time For Some Perspective…

Suvudu has revealed the cover for Jeff Grubb’s upcoming Star Wars novel, Scourge. The cover is designed by Scott Biel, and the image was done by Larry Rostant. It features Jedi Mander Zuma. Here is the official blurb:
In the heart of crime-ridden Hutt Space, a Jedi Scholar searches for justice.
While trying to obtain the coordinates of a secretive, peril-packed, but potentially beneficial trade route, a novice Jedi is killed—and the motive for his murder remains shrouded in mystery. Now his former Master, Jedi archivist Mander Zuma, wants answers, even as he fights to erase doubts about his own abilities as a Jedi. What Mander gets is immersion into the perilous underworld of the Hutts as he struggles to stay one step ahead in a game of smugglers, killers, and crime lords bent on total control.
Scourge is slated for release on April 24, 2012 in paperback and digital formats. You can see the details here.

It was announced yesterday that Del Rey editor-in-chief Betsy Mitchell will be retiring this December. Betsy has not only been the editor-in-chief at Del Rey for the last decade, but was also the editor for Timothy Zahn’s famous Heir to the Empire. Many readers will note that she helped with the Heir to the Empire 20th Anniversary Edition by contributing to the annotations as well as writing the afterword. We here at Roqoo Depot wish her the best in her retirement.
Furthermore Frank Paris will be taking the position of in-house coordinator for Del Rey’s Star Wars novels and editorial lead for Del Rey’s other licensed tie-ins. Frank will be working along with Shelly Shapiro and Erich Schoeneweiss. You can read more about the announcements here.
