On Rowena Cory Daniells website, she conducted a very nice interview with author Sean Williams. A wide range of topics were covered including Star Wars, writing, the upcoming World Fantasy Convention in San Diego in October, eBooks and changes in the publishing industry, music, the Royal Institution of Australia, and even curries. There is also a contest at the end where Sean will be giving away a copy of his books Magic Dirt, Troubletwisters, and Cenotaxis, however you’ll have to answer his Doctor Who question:

As a long-time Dr Who fan, Sean says, if the Tardis appeared in your living room and Dr Who stepped out and invited you on an adventure, which of the Doctors would you like it to be and why?

You can head on over to Rowena Cory Daniells website to check out the interview and to enter the contest here.

Oh the hours of my life I lost playing you

Growing up, I collected those wonderful Micro Machines Action Fleet Star Wars toys. I had just about every model ship they put out, from the countless TIE Fighter permutations to the entire lineup of Rebellion starfighters. I even had Wedge Antilles’ battle damaged X-Wing, because at the age of eight, I didn’t want to be Luke Skywalker the Jedi Knight. I wanted to be Captain Antilles, starfighter jockey. It was the minor characters that fleshed out the Star Wars universe and created a feeling of adventuring grandeur in my mind. I used to spend hours every day with my Red Two X-Wing and Imperial TIE Fighter playing out the continuing adventures of Wedge Antilles in my head*.

*As you can imagine, the day I discovered the X-Wing novels by Michael Stackpole and Aaron Allston was a watershed day in my fandom life.

In my imagination, I was an orange-clad starfighter pilot. I burned a hole through my VHS copy of A New Hope and Return of the Jedi because I would watch, rewind, and re-watch the dogfight scenes.  The first legitimate fanfiction I ever wrote in any fandom were about the military pilots of the New Republic (ed. note: neeeeeeeeeerd).  Thankfully for eight-year-old me, my parents chose to foster my love of these minor characters and non-Jedi stories. Let me tell you about the best birthday ever. Okay, so I won’t actually bore you with the details. In brief, it was the one where I unwrapped a copy of Lucasarts’ X-WING.

Update: Star Wars Books added the following mini excerpt…

“Confidence,” Dash retorted, annoyed at being pulled out of his pleasant reverie. “The Outrider is twice the ship the Falcon is.” As far as he was concerned Solo’s boat was a scow compared with Dash’s heavily modified YT-2400.

StarWars.com has posted a seven page excerpt from the upcoming novel Shadow Games. You can read the excerpt here. Shadow Games is written by Michael Reaves and Maya Kaathryn Bohnhoff and will be out November 29, 2011 in paperback and eBook formats.

Hurricane Irene Inbound

August 25, 2011 at 11:34 am | Posted in Science News | Leave a comment

Today’s Science Thursday post is of a more serious nature. As if the 5.9 earthquake on Tuesday wasn’t enough to startle people on the East Coast, now Hurricane Irene looms on the ocean as it closes in on the coast. With winds already clocked at 115 mph, the effects of the storm could be severe as it hits stateside since the path of the storm is predicted to turn north today. The National Weather Service has warned that “widespread damaging winds, torrential rain, coastal flooding, dangerous rip currents/waves and beach erosion” could happen as a result of Irene and anyone in the projected path should make preparations as soon as possible. New Jersey is especially on guard due to the threat of flooding and the high amount of rainfall they’ve already received. Continue Reading Hurricane Irene Inbound…
