The Old Republic Expected To Outperform Earnings Estimates

For Science Thursday this week I thought it would be fun to discuss one of my favorite subjects: Money. Economics is, after all, a science. It has it’s own set of rules and equations to which we must adhere. It is a science I’m sure we all wish was being studied and applied with greater veracity these days. This being a Star Wars fan site I thought I could bring the fictional world of the galaxy far far away to us in the realest way possible. Finding a way to make real money from our favorite science fantasy.

This morning Wall St. analyst Cowens Equity Research Associates has upgraded video game maker EA to an “outperform” rating from a “neutral” rating for the first time since the company began tracking EA’s financial in 2005. Cowen analyst Doug Creutz is quoted in a Yahoo! Business article as saying, “Since ‘Star Wars‘ became available for pre-orders three weeks ago, it has tracked very strongly on the top-selling video games list. We believe it is trending as well or better than two of the top-selling PC titles last year, Blizzard’s ‘Starcraft 2‘ and ‘World of Warcraft: Cataclysm‘, both of which went on to sell over 4 million units. We are raising our ‘Star Wars‘ first year sell-though estimate to 3 million units from 1.5 million units and our run-rate subscriber estimate to 2 million from 1 million.”

You can track EA’s performance in the daily market under the ticker symbol ERTS. A quick peek at the stocks quote for the day shows EA trading at about $7.50 below its 52 weel high of $25.05. In early trading today it is down $.11 to $17.62 and according to the spec sheet it lost forty five cents a share in the most recently reported quarter.

All that to say this is in no way an endorsement of an investment strategy. ERTS clearly has some trouble making money but then that puts them in pretty good company these days.

Other games EA is releasing soon that are expected to do well are NCAA Football 12, Madden NFL 12, Battlefield 3, and Sims Social is set to be released on Facebook next week.

So if that investment in Tibana Gas Mines or Glitterstim aren’t paying off, if those shares you bought in Tendandro Arms have stagnated since the end of the war with the Yuuzhan Vong, and the Correlian Shipyards aren’t paying off the way they used to, perhaps it’s time to thaw some credits from their carbonite and try the video game market right here on Earth.

For the record, this is an informational piece and again, not a recommended investment strategy in any way.
