As an ongoing part of our reviews of non-Star Wars books by Star Wars authors, I’ve reviewed the final book in the Erevis Cale Trilogy (though not the last book in the ongoing series) Midnight’s Mask by Paul S. Kemp. This story wraps up the hero’s quest to stop the Sojourner and his dark, mysterious plot to harness untold amounts of magical power. As the characters continue their transformations, they face even more difficult challenges and foes. Click here to read my full review.

Space Station Disaster

June 30, 2011 at 8:23 am | Posted in Humor, Science News | Leave a comment

This week for Sci Fi Thursday I give you the inner workings of a truly disturbed mind. Mine. I read yesterday that the crew of the International Space Station found themselves in jeopardy when a piece of space trash (yes the kind I always make a fuss about) almost hit the station. It was big enough and close enough to cause the crew to board their escape vehicles. The following video is in no way a representation of what actually happened to those brave men and women. It is merely what went through this science fiction addict’s muddled mind as he read the story. I now share my daydream with all of you.

Tranformers: Dark of the Moon Review

Transformers: Dark of the Moon, in typical Transformers fashion, is jammed with action-packed robot fighting and in-your-face comedy.  Though definitely a step up from the over-done second installment in the Michael Bay directed trilogy, the film fails to live up to the first Transformers movie.  That isn’t to say that it is a bad movie – it is not by any means. Star Wars Galaxies Shutting Down and a Petition to Save It

You’ve probably heard that Lucasfilm and Sony will be shutting down the massively multiplayer online game Star Wars Galaxies on December 15th. With Star Wars The Old Republic in the pipeline, it makes sense to streamline the marketplace and cut back on costs. However, dedicated fans created a petition to keep the game alive. The petition requests that Sony convert the game from pay-to-play to free-to-play, further suggesting that they could downsize the game to a smaller amount of servers to reduce operations costs, and profits could still be made off the sale of virtual items in the game. The idea itself has merit. According to venturebeat.com, games like Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons and Dragons Online have been very successful in tremendously increasing their game base by changing their models to free-to-play.

Yet there are also accusations that Sony is trying to silence the petition by banning players and locking forums topics involving the petition. Sony even commented on the issue: “Promoting an online petition causes disruption within the community and does not provide gameplay feedback that our development team can use.” So whether or not Star Wars Galaxies can be saved remains very much up in the air, but there is one glimmer of hope gamers can cling on to. According to G4tv.com the Star Wars Galaxies Emulator will still be available on its own private server for those who wish to game on.

Smile Earth – You’re On Candid Camera

If only Alan Funt were alive to see this. This week for Science Tuesday I give you UrtheCast. By spring of 2012, the entirety of planet Earth will be available for viewing by a pair of cameras mounted to the International Space Station that has been described by it’s creators as “Google Earth on steroids.”

An article in Popular Science (www.popsci.com) by Rebecca Boyle states:

A Canadian company called UrtheCast (don’t ask us why it’s spelled this way) arranged a deal with Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, to bring two cameras to the International Space Station sometime later this year, where they will be mounted on the exterior. The video will be downlinked to Earth and broadcast online.

One camera will shoot in high-definition, with a frame rate of 3.25 fps, and another will broadcast in lower resolution, offering a three-color image. It will provide the first high-definition continuous video footage of Earth, according to Scott Larson, co-founder and president of UrtheCast, in a promotional video.

The system will work as a sort of mashup between Google Earth and YouTube, Larson says, connecting live footage with maps and other capabilities. Users will be able to pause, rewind and zoom, and view specific times and locations — so long as the ISS was passing overhead at the time.

Review: Falling Skies Episode 3 – Prisoner of War

Continuing our coverage of the sci-fi television show Falling Skies, last night’s episode Prisoner of War was good but a little slow. The big theme in the episode was the harnesses (the alien technology that renders children into slave laborers) and the new doctor who can hopefully remove them from the kids without killing them. Dr. Michael Harris is played by actor Steven Weber who you might recognize from the old tv show Wings or from the classic Vietnam war movie Hamburger Hill. I really liked Weber’s performance in Hamburger Hill, unfortunately his character Dr. Harris isn’t the most likable sort. He’s a pessimist and as a doctor he doesn’t show the most care and concern for his patients. Regardless he did well with the part and it’ll be interesting to see what they do with the character in future episodes. Continue Reading Review: Falling Skies Episode 3 – Prisoner of War…
